Defa engine preheater installation

Defa electric heaters

Company “Avtoholod” offers electric heaters from the Norwegian manufacturer Defa. They are the ideal choice for those who leave the car in an unheated garage or in a cold parking lot. The only condition. the parking place must be equipped with an electrical outlet for 220 V. After installing a simple and reliable Defa system you get the following advantages:

  • quick engine start;
  • preservation of its motor resources;
  • Decrease in engine repair costs;
  • reducing fuel consumption;
  • Reduction of environmental pollution;
  • comfortable ride from the first minutes of boarding the car.

DEFA heater installation

Half a year ago bought a heater DEFA 411122. I had some free time on vacation and decided to do it myself. Bought only the heater (3600) without cable. If the cable branded at once the price is 2300 I decided to make a cable myself.

Further a cutter cut off plastic that prevents to fasten contacts on pins Def:

Defa installation is very inconvenient. Т.к. It is necessary to knock the plug out of the block. There is no place to swing a hammer.

First I took off the metal plate from the exhaust:

It is necessary to remove the radiator. What entails a drain of the antifreeze (I immediately made replacement).

Removal of two antifreeze hoses, two hoses of automatic transmission fluid, as well as pull the plugs from the fans. I did not drain the fluid from the cooler, after removing the hoses, I shut them off. The photo below:

After that podzaporized work in a tilt and decided to “hose” took a picture bending back ))))

Do not forget to drain the antifreeze from the engine block.

Further not to crush a radiator of a conditioner, waving a hammer while ramming a heater. I leaned a plywood.

That’s it, now we can start knocking out the plug. We hit with a hammer through the furrow in the corner of the plug.

There were moments that were about to and the plug was turning so that it wanted to fly into the shirt. But all went well:

Then a good wipe the place of hammering. We put sealant on the heater and hammer it in place of the plug. We hammer in without much effort. Trying to hammer it in evenly, without tilting. And here is the result:

I decided to make it out of a computer power cable. Took the cable. which is Papa on one side, Mama on the other. I cut the Mama off at the root. it will serve as a plug and put it on the Papa at once.

The ends of wires Mom tinned lugs. And immediately put on a corrugation, which will further serve as a good protection. Especially the stiffness at the junction of the cable with the heater pins. Picture below:

Fastened the pins to the sleeved lugs:

Further, it is necessary to bolt the contacts to the heater plugs:

And now we’re going to pull the sleeves over this place with difficulty. I took off the battery and pulled the corrugated tube with cable to the left fender, and there I fixed it with plastic cable ties to other cables in the corrugation.

Before pouring the antifreeze out don’t forget to unscrew the screw which is located over the thermostat. it will let the air out. Pour the antifreeze slowly, less than 1 liter per minute to let the air out.

Already rolled 400 km, drove and on hot days. Was looking at it the other day, I wondered if the tape can withstand the high temperature. Everything is fine. The corrugation just protects the tape from the high temperature. Did not see any melting of the cone or the duct tape.

your car will be warm and cosy. i think the heater will be much lighter, they cost about 1.5RUB and defa is a real bargain

I can argue. Power of my heater is 600 W. I agree with the fact that the Severs 2 kW heats faster. But Defa has a number of pluses:1. Does not interfere with the circulation of the antifreeze (t.к. no taps in the circulation system)2. will not leak as happens with the Severs. Severs has the following problems. In frosty weather the antifreeze quickly warms up and “expands” the hoses. Т.к. hot water rushes upwards. Leakage.3. No possibility of boiling the engine. If the 2 kW heater is left switched on for a long time there is all chance to boil the block. And Defa is designed so that even if it will work for days will not boil. heat will have time to dissipate.

Defa WarmUp heaters /heating from 220V/

DEFA WarmUp. it is comfort, reliability and economy at winter operation of the car. With system DEFA WarmUp snow, ice and a frost disappear from glasses of the car, salon warms up to room temperature, and you preserve the health, getting in the warm and cozy car. By the desired time your car engine is already preheated and the battery is fully charged. The engine starts with a jerk and quickly reaches operating temperature, and the heater inside the car starts to give warmth without delay and the windows do not get fogged.

In any frosty weather the complex DEFA WarmUp system guarantees an easy engine start and full battery charge. With the DEFA WarmUp preheating system you will forget the problem of cold starting and go on the road in the comfort of a fully heated car!

Regardless of type and brand, a cold engine will always consume more fuel, and its emissions will contain more harmful substances. Compared to a cold engine, a DEFA WarmUp preheated engine is easier to start, uses far less fuel, and is subject to far less wear and tear.

Now you don’t have to worry about your car battery going dead in a cold winter night, the engine will freeze and won’t start, and the car will freeze and be iced over. With the DEFA WarmUp system you will forget forever about a dead battery, a frozen interior and a cold start in winter! Comfort and safety from the first minutes of driving, less fuel consumption and engine parts wear and less pollution emissions, these are the most important factors that ensured DEFA WarmUp heating system world-wide recognition and made it a market leader.

DEFA WarmUp car preheating system works from 220V and provides preheating of the engine and car interior while charging the battery. DEFA WarmUp system has a modular design and includes the following components: engine heater, cabin heater, battery charger and electronic control unit.

The engine block heater warms up the engine and makes starting the engine easy and comfortable on cold days. The engine heater helps to save money and the environment, since a warmed engine consumes considerably less fuel and its emissions contain fewer pollutants.

The cabin heater warms up the passenger compartment to room temperature and keeps windows from getting covered in snow and ice. You no longer have to clear snow and ice from the windshield before each trip.

The electronic control unit is easy to program and lets you fully warm the car by the set time with minimal energy consumption. The control unit can automatically set the optimum warm-up time depending on the outside temperature.

The battery charger ensures that the battery is fully charged in both winter and summer. On short journeys the battery does not have enough time to recharge, especially if the vehicle is equipped with additional electrical equipment. The entire system is connected to the mains 220V with DEFA Mini Plug.

“How big is the economy?”says the sceptic and is wrong. Researches have shown that use of a starting heater on a usual passenger car allows to save 0,1. 0,5 liters of fuel on each start. For large volume diesel engines used in heavy machinery and much slower heating up, this value can be up to a liter or more. And winter lasts for at least 100 days. Here you go and count.

In the previous issues you have already got acquainted with the autonomous heaters and preheaters “Webasto”. Now let’s talk about products of the Norwegian company DEFA. But first let’s remember the peculiarities of winter operation of equipment.

First of all it is difficult to start a cold engine. It is due, on the one hand, to the high viscosity of the dried oil, making it difficult to turn the engine crankshaft. Because of it a cold engine for a long time works in the conditions of oil starvation and very strongly wears out. According to some reports, every start of the engine at a temperature of.15. 20°C is equivalent to 500 km run in a car and about 10 moto-hours in a tractor (a day’s work)!).

The second unpleasant feature of frost is that at low temperatures the capacity of the battery decreases. Thus, already at.180 C it is reduced by 60%. The situation is aggravated by the fact that power consumption in winter increases noticeably, and the generator has no time to fully charge the battery during short trips.

In the light of the above said it is necessary to admit, that however good preheaters operating on liquid fuel are, they brilliantly solve only one half of winter problems. they warm up the engine quickly and well. But it’s not without reason that they say that the greatest disadvantages are an extension of the advantages. Independently of external power sources, these heaters also work well in a closed parking lot, in the middle of a construction site, or in the middle of a clear field. But they draw power from the car’s onboard power grid. How not to recall the historical phrase from the movie “Beware of the Car”: “Yes, it’s no life with an old battery!”

System DEFA WarmUP differs from other preheaters that solves all problems at once. It will both warm up the engine and the cabin, and recharge the battery as well. It is environmentally friendly and solves all the problems in cases where it is possible to plug in the AC power supply of standard 220 volts. DEFA WarmUp has a modular design and consists of an engine heater, cabin heater, battery charger and electronic control unit.

Wide range and variety of designs allows their installation on a wide range of engines, regardless of their displacement and cooling system. Heaters are designed for cars, trucks, buses, tractors, minivans, stationary motors and any other automotive equipment.

The whole palette is divided into 8 series and includes about 200 modifications for more than 700 motors. Warmers differ in principle, location and mounting. But they are all similar in that they are highly reliable, simple in design, easy to install and safe to use.

The choice of one or another modification is carried out individually, taking into account the design features of a particular engine. Many heaters are attached to the engine so that the active element is located directly in the cooling jacket and heats the entire coolant through convective heat transfer.

The electric heater element is a closed type. There is an incandescent coil inside it that simultaneously plays the role of a fuse, as it blows up in an extreme situation, protecting the motor from overheating. All types of heaters are discussed in detail below.

HEATERS WITH A FLAT CONICAL FLANGE

Serial number 001 to 099. Have a short tapered flange that is pressed into the hole on the cylinder block. This type of heater is used on engines that have a sufficiently large space inside the cooling jacket to contain the entire active part of the heater.

PREHEATERS WITH CUP TAPERED FLANGE

Serial number 100 to 199. Flange shaped like a cup with all or part of the active part of the heating element inside. These heaters are mainly used on engines with very tight cooling jackets. Several seat cones of different diameters can be bored out for these heaters, what allows using the same heater on different engines.

Serial numbers from 200 to 299. They have a thread on the flange and are mounted on the cylinder block to replace the threaded plug. Sealed by a gasket or tapered thread. When secured, the heating element remains stationary and the heater flange rotates around it.

HEATERS WITH A T-BOLT OR EXPANDING BRACKET

Serial number from 300 to 399. The flange is cylindrical in various lengths. Seal between heater flange and cylinder block wall with a rubber ring or rubber gasket. Heater is secured to the cylinder block with a T-bolt (expander clamp) that rests against the inside of the cylinder block. On the outside, the T-bolt is secured with a nut that presses into the flange face. Installation in this way is used when the wall of the cylinder block is too thin to withstand the tension or the installation is carried out in places difficult to access, where it is not possible to make the press.

DEFA principle of operation

The heater of this brand is a complex modular system consisting of small units and connection cables Plug In.

Heating occurs due to an increase in temperature in the cooling system. The device works from 220 volts and is controlled by an electronic remote.

DEFA system consists of the following components:

Test of the DEFA engine preheater

We test the system of engine heating

Frost and Sun Yes, it can be a nice day for someone, but not for the car enthusiast, who is always wondering if his four-wheeled friend will start or not? At low temperatures, the car owner had two problems: how to change the state of the oil in the crankcase from mushy to liquid and how to make the gasoline evaporate. Some “comrades”, however, also froze the coolant. Fortunately, the imagination of the Russian people knows no boundaries, and so someone made a fire under the car, someone poured boiling water on the intake manifold, and someone stuck under the crankcase electric stove. By the way, the latter method has something in common with electric engine and cabin heating systems, one of which we will get closely acquainted with in this material.

about the electric engine heating system

The company DEFA began its operations back in 1946 in Norway, where they know about the cold firsthand. Development and production of electric heaters began to engage in the 60’s of last century, and by the time we have accumulated considerable experience, materialized in the final product. We have repeatedly made reviews of engine preheaters and have now decided to move from theory to practice and get your own experience to check the effectiveness and features of using the system DEFA Warm Up. DEFA Warm Up. a complete system preheating the car, working from a network of 220/230 volts. A distinctive feature. a modular design, which allows you to pick up the necessary equipment, without overpaying for the functions that you do not need. On the other hand, to the system, as to the construction set of cubes, add new elements, thereby expanding the functionality of the system. Basic system contains only heater and electric cable connected to the socket. The heating element can be of two types: universal, which is installed in the cut hoses small circle of the cooling system, or developed for a particular brand of car. In the second case, the heater is usually installed directly in the engine block instead of the original plug. The system works simply: plugged into the socket. it heats, removed. the system shut down, and to automate the process you can use an external timer. Maximum configuration includes battery charger, electronic control unit, cabin heater and temperature sensor in addition to the DEFA engine heater. Naturally, the choice of components from minimum to maximum configuration can be varied almost at will. Separate attention should be paid to electronic control unit preheating engine DEFA. This small device, about the size of a pager, can display the following parameters: time, exit time 1, exit time 2, battery voltage, overboard temperature. If the temperature sensor is not installed, the last two parameters are not reflected. The unit has 4 modes of engine heating: automatic, heating during 1, 2, 3 hours before the set time of departure. Particularly interesting is the automatic heating mode, when activated, the temperature sensor measures the ambient temperature, analyzing it the control unit determines the necessary heating time and turns on heating in accordance with the set time of starting the engine. If the engine has not been started in due time, the delay function is activated, after which the heating is prolonged for two more hours, after which the system is switched off. The sensor of ice has pleasantly surprised. If the vehicle enters an area where the temperature drops below 4 °C or rises above 4 °C, the system switches off.4 ° C, then the display and button lighting starts flashing for 6 seconds, this feature has checked in person. it works.

INSTALLATION of DEFA preheater with your own hands or car service

In our case, as the test was a Nissan Micra, which was mounted a complete set of heaters DEFA Warm Up. Installation of the system was carried out in a specialized technical center, which is due to the peculiarities of the electric thermocouple installation. Before mounting the system the specialists find out the exact model and year of manufacture of the engine. This is necessary in order to accurately select the heating element in the same engine Micra was selected 600-watt element, remotely resembling a classic kettle. Less power would have led to a noticeable increase in warm-up time and a decrease in the final engine temperature, but more could have led to more unfortunate consequences. This is due to the fact that the system works without the temperature sensor coolant and use a more powerful element can cause boiling antifreeze, with all the ensuing consequences. But with DEFA engine block heating you are insured against this kind of occurrences, because.к. all heaters are designed for a specific engine, taking into account many parameters and tested. Some elements have an integrated thermostat. Plus reliability is backed up by a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. After the antifreeze was drained and the thermocouple was installed. On this model of engine it was installed and fixed with a special plate on the back of the cylinder block instead of the technological plug, which can be clearly seen in the photo. If it is not possible to put the heater directly on the cylinder block because of the very tight arrangement, a universal element is installed in the cut of the cooling system hoses. The next step in the process of mounting the engine preheater was to install a special socket Mini Plug to power the system: this process does not take much time, as to fix it only need to drill a small hole in the left middle part of the front bumper. After the above-described operation the question arose: where to install the sensor of external temperature? It is needed to activate the engine block heater when the ambient temperature reaches the level you specify. After some deliberation it was decided to mount it in the inner cavity of the front bumper. away from the dirt and vandals. The last stage of work in the underhood space was the installation of the battery charging unit, which was mounted on the left cup of the shock absorber rack next to the battery. After we have finished with the underhood space, the whole front of work has shifted to the interior of the car, where it was necessary to install the control unit and heater. The first expert “have determined” for permanent residence a block which, by the way, has a pleasant enough orange illumination (it has been glued on the double-sided adhesive tape on the left side of a dashboard). Then they have started to install the heater which purpose is clear without additional explanations. In our case, the unit was selected maximum capacity of 1400 watts with the ability to work in 800-watt mode with a ceramic heater, as the car seems to be a small, but for the more heat-loving motorists, there is a 2000-watt. By common efforts we managed to find a place for it as well, we put it under the glove box on the passenger side. It should be said that the heater is removable (only a small holding bracket is permanently mounted), and in addition, it has a regular plug and can be used independently, for example, for heating a garage. The last point in the modernization of the salon is the installation of a power outlet for the above-described heater, which is “sheltered” from the left bottom side of the dashboard. After installing all the modules, it was necessary to wire the cabin and connect all the electrical circuits together using the technological holes in the engine panel. Completed all the operations, the car was poured back in the salts, then we heated the engine until the thermostat was triggered to remove the steam plugs. If you do not do this operation, the heating element can be in the air space, overheat and fail. In principle, the installation of this system with an electric engine preheater can be done with your own hands, but it is better to trust the experts. Note: Installation of a complete set with engine heating in the service center will take you from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the internal layout of the underhood and from 50 to 350 euros. In our opinion, you should pay attention to this system first of all for people who have an electrified garage, a private home, as well as for companies with their own fleet of cars located in a cold garage or in the open air.
