“20 minutes and done”: learn the features of clothes drying machines
After washing, things, even well wrung out by a modern washing machine, still need to dry. You can do it the old-fashioned way: hang it on the balcony, in the bathroom or on the radiators, but there is another option. to use the services of a drying machine.
The dryer reduces the drying time, which is the best option if you want to put on your favorite sweater (shirt, dress, skirt, pants), but it is wet, and there is no time to wait until it dries on the balcony. You simply put your sweater in the dryer, activate the dryer, and no later than 20-30 minutes later you can put it on.
Before you buy a dryer, be sure to understand exactly where you will install it. Good for those who have a dedicated room. for washing and ironing. But most often there is no special room. Then, to save space, you can consider installing the equipment in the column: the dryer is installed on the washing machine by means of special fasteners.
In a drum-type dryer, items are placed in a special drying drum (similar to the drum of a washing machine), the drum rotates, and warm air is applied to the items. drying takes place.
Drum dryers are in turn divided by the principle of moisture extraction: into condensing and extraction. In simple words, the difference is that in condensing ones, the warm air, which has taken moisture from the drying clothes, goes into a special condenser chamber. There it cools, the condensate is either immediately discharged into the sewer, or enters the container designed for it (later it needs to be emptied by the user). In the exhaust models, the moist air is immediately removed into the room ventilation system (removing it simply into the room is not a better option).
There are also drying closets, which are noticeably larger in size, but since the drying process in them is static (things are stationary), they may be described as somewhat more functional. In fact, things of delicate fabrics, hats, footwear, outerwear can be dried statically, without the risk of deformation. However, some modern trommel dryers have almost caught up with the drying closets in terms of functionality.
The type of drying can also vary. Some are timed dryers: the user sets the drying time (or it is set at the factory for the various drying programmes), and the machine switches off at the end of this time.
There are models that realize the drying to a certain residual humidity. Special sensors inside the machine detect the humidity in the laundry and the appliance “knows” when it is time to finish drying. In this case the user is free to set the degree of residual moisture. For example, if the object is to be ironed, it must be more humid than if it is to be put into the cupboard.
The user of a modern tumble dryer usually has only to select the type of fabric. The machine dries things according to the factory settings, for example, jeans allow a fairly intensive drying at a fairly high temperature, and many delicate fabrics should be dried at all without heating.
There are also models, where programs for drying of specific items are provided: shirts, jeans, jackets, etc.д. These are preset at the factory algorithms of drying. There are models that can dry woolen clothes. usually in a specially installed basket, allowing woolen things to stay still (basket can also be used to dry shoes, other things, so that not only drying cabinets are suitable for this).
In many automatic dryers, things can not only dry, but also simply “air out”. to get rid of dust, hair, unpleasant odor, in general refresh. This is usually done by activating the corresponding program.
How to choose a dryer for clothes: we help to determine the criteria
A stand-alone clothes dryer is probably one of the most obscure household appliances on the modern Russian market. If the washing machine has long been a standard even for small apartments, then to meet a separate machine for drying and to this day may not be too easy. Residents of the former Soviet Union prefer to use a combined washer and dryer or dry clothes the old-fashioned way, hanging them on a folding metal dryer.
There could be several objective reasons for this user behavior, if you think about it. Here are the most obvious of these.
The reluctance to spend money on expensive appliances is a common-sense argument. Judge for yourself: according to Yandex.Marketplace, at the time of writing this article:
- The cheapest automatic washer-dryer costs about 10 thousand;
- The cheapest automatic washing machine with dryer is about 18 thousand;
- among dryers found a single offer for 14 thousand, all others start at 22 thousand.
Thus, if we discard minor accidents, it turns out that a cheap dryer is more expensive than a cheap washer with a dryer function. Seems like a paradox, but facts are stubborn things.
On the other hand a usual electric towel dryer (which represents, roughly speaking, a heating element hidden in a metal pipe) will cost on the average about 15 thousand, although in its drying capacity it definitely loses even to the most primitive dryer.
Saving of electricity is a much weaker argument. One drying cycle will cost approximately 0.7-1.5 kW·which, of course, is not much (especially in comparison with the price of the machine itself).
The dimensions of a dryer are about the same as a conventional washing machine. Well, since a washing machine in our country is traditionally installed in the bathroom (and not in the kitchen, as it is adopted in many countries), it is not surprising that one cannot always find a place for a second appliance with the same dimensions.
On the other hand, many dryers allow installation directly on the washing machine (from above, with a special adapter), and the usual folding dryer, which can be found probably in every house with hanging laundry will take about two square meters of living space. In most cases, if there is room for a washing machine, there is also room for a dryer.
Availability of washing machines with dryers
Of course, if there is not enough space, the most obvious solution would be to buy a washing machine with drying function (such machines are fairly common). However, let us not forget that in this case, drying is a secondary task, and therefore not all washing machines cope with this task well enough. In addition, most machines are capable of drying much less laundry at one time than they can wash from ½ up to ⅔ of the maximum drum load. In practice, this means that running a washer-dryer program will make you do laundry about twice as often.
Thus, besides a quite natural desire to avoid extra costs the only arguments against buying a dryer can be only inertia of mind (we dried the laundry on a rope all our life and will continue to do it the same way), small size of the bathroom (for example, if you had to buy a small-sized washer under the sink in order to save space) or a mistake in planning the room (the space above the washer is already taken by a cabinet or shelves, and there is no room for the dryer).
A curious observation
As a rule, the overwhelming number of people, criticizing such appliance as a separate dryer and proving that it is useless and nobody needs it, willingly admit that they have never used it in their life and their criticism is based on the things, which are clear to everybody, i.e. it has exclusively speculative character.
But among people who already have this device in the household, the number of those who would be willing to give it up is negligible.
And if they do?
As for choosing the right dryer for your laundry, there aren’t too many potential complications and problems to be expected. Virtually all modern dryers do a decent job, and the difference between them lies mainly in the ease of operation and the cost of the electricity bill. Let’s take a look at the models on the market today, and see how they are similar and how they differ.
Size and installation method
The vast majority of commercially available tumble dryers are freestanding or partially built-in appliances. Many of them allow installation in a column on top of a conventional washing machine. Their dimensions are about the same as a full-size freestanding washing machine (about 85×60×60 cm). There are also more compact models, usually with reduced depth.
What it means in practice? You probably can’t buy a fully integrated laundry dryer in a kitchen set: you can’t cover the front panel with a fronts. On the other hand, if you are not worried about the look of the dryer in the kitchen, many models allow installation under the countertop, and therefore you do not need to look for space in the bathroom. Despite the obviousness of this fact, let us remind: the vast majority of dryers do not need to be connected to the sewer, they can be placed in any place where there is a socket.
Installation of dryers on washing machines is carried out with special adapters, usually plastic adapters, with which the devices are joined and fastened to each other. Such an adapter may be included in the delivery of the dryer or sold as an additional accessory for the washing machine. Therefore, it is better to worry about its presence in advance, at the stage of selecting a suitable model.
Remember also that there is no fundamental prohibition on the installation of a washing machine and dryer in different places. For example, the washing machine in the bathroom and dryer in the kitchen. Or the washing machine in the kitchen and the dryer in the hallway. This is simply less convenient, t. к. Washed and wrung out laundry will have to be carried to another place.
Despite the fact that if you want, you can buy the most real drying cabinet (in which you can hang laundry directly on the hanger), the vast majority of dryers on the market are drum-type devices. What it means? The clothes in the dryers are placed in the drum (just like in washing machines). However, the sides of such a drum are smooth, and the farther wall (end face) is peorized. The openings on the end will blow air, and the smooth sides of the drum will serve to smooth out the laundry.
Dryer Troubleshooting. Not Drying or Taking a Long Time to Dry
During operation, the air passes through special filters, which should be cleaned from time to time from laundry particles. This task, however, is not particularly difficult.
Ventilation or condensation
Modern tumble dryers come in two types, ventilated or condensation drying. The difference lies primarily in the way the moist air is neutralized. The ventilated type driers draw the moist air outdoors or into the ventilation system through a special duct. It is clear that in an enclosed space without the possibility of withdrawal of excess humid air, such a dryer cannot be used.
Condensation dryers collect the excess water in a special tank, which must be emptied periodically. You can install it virtually anywhere there is a power outlet.
Finally, some models allow connection to a sewer, which means that excess moisture is automatically drained. It is convenient and practical, but imposes certain restrictions on the place of installation.
On average, a vented dryer is less expensive than a condensation dryer, but, in most cases, will use more energy.
The most modern dryers are equipped with a heat pump, a special device for cooling the air that has passed through the drum with the laundry. That is, in fact, a compact refrigeration machine.
In traditional dryers, the air is cooled by the temperature difference with the air in the room, which has not been found to be efficient enough. The presence of a special cooling device (compressor pumping the refrigerant) at first sight is associated with additional costs for electricity, but practice has shown that as a result such a solution is more economical, and the total electricity consumption for drying the laundry is lower.
The fact is that the heat pump cooling circuit not only draws in excess air heat when the moisture condenses, but at the same time heats the next batch of air that is just being prepared to enter the drum. The electrical energy is thus consumed only once but does useful work twice working for cooling in one part of the machine and heating in the other. In our opinion, this is an example of very elegant engineering. Despite the fact that the machines with a heat pump will cost more, in our opinion, it is not worth saving in this case.
Since we are talking about electricity consumption, it is worth recalling the different energy efficiency classes. These classes range from the best A’s to the worst C’s. The latter, however, can not be found on today’s market, while the once-best class A has long since ceased to be the best, giving way to classes A, A, and A. As we can see, as household appliances evolve, new, more efficient solutions appear, which is reflected in the form of additional pluses that are added to Class A.
If you are too lazy to figure it out, just remember that the more pluses you see after the letter A, the more economical your machine will be. Otherwise, we recommend to refer directly to the instructions of the device, in which the developers will explain in detail exactly how much electricity will be spent for this or that drying program. And in some cases, even calculate the average electricity consumption for the year, saving you from having to arm your calculator.
As with a washing machine, the dryer has a set of different programs, aimed at different tasks and most suitable for those or other types of fabrics. Each program corresponds to a certain temperature, drying duration, as well as the recommended volume of laundry (usually measured in kilograms). So, for example, the same machine would be able to dry 6 kilos of terry towels, 4 kilos of jeans, 2.5 kilos of shirts or 1 kilo of wool clothes.
The availability of different programs is, of course, largely a matter of taste. The most popular and sought-after modes are found in all dryers without exception. However, if you have any personal needs and requirements, we would recommend that you check the availability of the appropriate programs in advance. Perhaps it is especially important for you to have a gentle drying or down mode of operation?
Those who deal with wool frequently should pay attention to whether the dryer (but then of course also the washing machine) has a Woolmark certificate. This certification means that the machine has been tested for gentle washing and drying of woolen items.
The interface should be chosen according to your personal tastes first of all. Some will be satisfied with a simple control panel consisting of a few mechanical buttons. Others will want to see a display showing the time left until the drying process is complete, and they will also want the machine to be fitted with special dryer humidity sensors. The same applies to optional features such as interior lighting, warning buzzers, etc. п.
Choosing the right tumble dryer is a straightforward task. Especially if you are prepared for it and have answered a few basic questions beforehand.
The first and most important of these is how to install the appliance. Do you want to put it on top of the washing machine or as a free-standing unit?? Will it require a sewer connection or air outlet to the ventilation system?? Answers to these questions will allow you to exclude obviously unsuitable models from consideration and narrow down the choice to a reasonable minimum. At the same stage, most likely, you will be able to decide whether a ventilated or condensing model is right for you.

The next step is the need to decide on the price, which is directly affected by factors such as the presence or absence of heat pump, a set of automatic programs available, as well as additional (optional) functions and, of course, markup for the brand.
After coming to a reasonable compromise on these issues, the choice is likely to be narrowed down to 3-5 models, and the final decision will not be difficult at all.
Myth 3. Drying. it is not economical and very energy-consuming
First of all, there is a system of moisture sensors in modern machines, which monitor the condition of fabric and evaluate the degree of residual moisture in the laundry themselves, based on data about the temperature and humidity of the air. Automatic drying modes work exactly on the basis of data received from sensors. The desired humidity is reached. the cycle is over. That way the machine doesn’t try to dry laundry that is already dry, and it reduces energy consumption. At the same time, the use of humidity sensors allows you to not over-dry things, but we’ll come back to this below.

Also, despite the fact that a machine with a dryer consumes more energy than one without it, there have long been washing and drying machines with energy class A, and dryers with A. For example, the model Candy GrandO Vita Smart GVSW 4364TWHC-07. washing and drying machine with inverter motor and energy class A, which is equipped not only with the humidity sensors described above, but also with KG-detector for automatic determination of the loaded laundry, so the user at the same time to save water and washing-up liquid.
Can I put a dryer on my balcony?
Here is a folding dryer for laundry, for a long time took up space on the balcony. and the idea came to mind, to make it “unobstructed” under your feet!
The washing machine. a necessary attribute of any modern home. Today it is difficult to imagine how you can wash even small things by hand. over, the procedure of washing non-standard items, such as sneakers, has become commonplace. That’s why this unit is a must-have in every home.
Most often the washing machine is placed in bathrooms or in combined toilets (depending on the layout). This is the easiest option, requiring no remodeling or much effort to connect. The same can be said when placing the appliance in the kitchen. Recently, built-in models, which do not take up much space, but fit perfectly into kitchen sets, have become very popular.
Major cause of dryer fires often ignored
However, not in all cases it is possible to place the washing machine in these rooms. Very often, for example, in khrushchevkas owners think about alternative locations. Where else can you put this household appliance?
And this option does exist. Why not use a place in the house that has no obvious purpose, and very often serves only as storage. We’re talking about the balcony.
Which dryers are best for the balcony??
In the winter, the temperature on the balcony can drop below freezing.Ten degrees. If you put a washing machine on it, the water in the pipes, the pump and the filler valve will freeze, ice will crush the parts and the appliance will be out of order. And what happens if you put the dryer on the balcony?
With this device is easier, because there are not so many elements in its construction, in which the moisture accumulates. Will the dryer start in winter, in sub-zero temperatures? It depends on the type of machine. Some models are “afraid” of cold weather, others are less affected by frost.
Dryers of the exhaust (ventilation) type are most susceptible to breakdowns at low temperatures because of the design features and principle of operation. Drying of things is carried out in such models at the expense of heated air. It is saturated with moisture, which evaporates from the laundry and comes out. When installing such machines, a special outlet to a ventilation shaft or directly to the street is required. And during the operation of devices their owners can face a number of problems.
- The need for proper installation of ventilation on the balcony.
- It is impossible to use a dryer in winter, because in conditions of low temperatures the air does not have time to warm up inside the machine.
- Condensate freezes and ice forms on the duct walls. As a result, the device completely fails.
Note! Ventilation dryers should not be placed on balconies.
Condensing appliances are less “sensitive” to frost. They have a different operating principle. Dry and heated air flows into the drum, picks up moisture and enters the heat exchanger. It produces condensate, which is collected in a special container or immediately disposed of in the sewage system.
It is not possible to equip even an insulated balcony with a sewer, and it is possible to pour out the accumulated water from the tank after each run of the machine. This way the moisture does not freeze inside the appliance. It will be protected from damage.
Optimal for installation on a glazed balcony. modern models of heat pump dryers. Their peculiarity lies in the fact that they once take the air from the environment, which then circulates inside the device. Minimum amount of humid air escapes outside. The advantages of heat pump dryers are as follows:
Heat pump machines models, unlike ventilated and condensing dryers, are not equipped with heating elements. Their work is based on a circuit with a circulating heat transfer fluid. Compressor refrigerators and air conditioners have a similar principle of device. heated air in machines is forced into the drum, where it picks up moisture. It is then routed through the evaporator, cooled, drained, to the condenser and reheated. So the air circulates inside the appliance until it completely completes the cycle of drying the laundry.
The benefits of a tumble dryer
Proper drying is as important as proper laundry. It was this fact that inspired appliance manufacturers to develop efficient dryers and cabinets. Electric clothes dryer is indispensable if you do not have a balcony, near a busy highway or frequent rains. In order to choose a suitable model, it is worth to understand the principles of this variety of household appliances, the functions of different models and get acquainted with the innovative developments of world brands.
Can a washing machine be installed on the balcony?
It is possible or not to put such a technique on the loggia or balcony? This is the first question that should come to the mind of the owner. Such subterfuge is possible if the balcony is closed and insulated. Otherwise, the equipment will spoil, and the water in the hoses will freeze in frosty weather.
It is also important to make sure that the loggia slabs are strong. The washing machine weighs an average of 50 kg and plus vibrations. If the structure is strong, then under the legs will still have to put an anti-vibration cloth and set the machine on a level.
Other moments should not interfere with the accomplishment of the idea. Getting the washer through the doorway is not difficult. Difficulties lie in the wiring. You will need very long hoses. Such can spoil the interior design, but a good owner can hide them from prying eyes.
Drying laundry in an apartment without a balcony
How many of us think about the fact that to dry things in an apartment where there is no balcony, not only unsafe, but also bad for health?! And when it’s cold, it can take several days for your home to dry, too.к. With closed windows there is simply no sufficient flow of fresh air, not to mention the fact that every housewife knows: the longer a thing is dried, the more it loses its freshness. Also, in the cold season, there is a serious question of where to dry laundry in a private home, because there is no area that is designed for such purposes.
Installing the dryer for laundry: on the washing machine, in the column, in the bathroom
With the advent of new technology in the house, life becomes easier, but then the question arises: how to properly install it? Installing the dryer. a quick and uncomplicated process.
