Heat exchanger for gas burner with your own hands

The principle of operation of the standard heater

It does not matter, whether you organized the heating of the tent with your own hands, or purchased a ready-made device in a store, you should be familiar with the basic rules of heat engineering, applicable to any heating device. The combustion process begins with the preheating of fuel, which evaporates moisture from it and releases certain combustion products.

Then comes the stage of direct ignition and combustion of the fuel. The main indicator of the effective work of travel gas heaters is the degree of their heat exchange with the environment. This value is determined by the power of radiation of thermal energy and the degree of convection of heat exchange due to the flow of warm air.

The heat output depends on the oven’s heating temperature, the size of the heat exchanger, and the material of the gasoline or gas-powered heater. The degree of convection depends on the design of the furnace and the directionality of hot air flows. Air streams are directed by creating combustion chambers. Heat output also depends on the slope of the pipe, which discharges combustion gases from the tent, and the shape of the heater body. The smaller the angle of the pipe relative to the horizontal, the greater the heat output. Round gas tent heaters give off more heat than rectangular heat sink areas.

Gas heater with his own hands.

In the last post about my homemade camper for a pickup truck https://pikabu.ru/story/postroy_svoyu_mechtu_samodelnyiy_kem. I touched on the subject of heating it in the cold. And many people are interested in what it is and how it works. I promised to tell you more. Telling.

heat, exchanger, burner, your, hands

Having built a camper, I was a little stressed that it can not be used in the off-season. Cold.

Looking on profile sites, I found several solutions. But none of them suited me. Suggested or insanely expensive heaters Webasto, Planar and the like. from 30,000. Or Chinese equivalents from 25,000. All powered by fuel like diesel or gasoline. And it sucked the battery out mercilessly. Requires stationary installation and expensive maintenance. It can and it is good for company autohouses, but taking into account cost of my camper (50 000) the price of the heater is too great. There were other options like Trum. On gas. But the size of a battery.) Also not an option. I have only 2.5 m2))

Anyway, digging around the sites I found a simple and ingenious solution. Heat exchanger for a winter tent.

What is it?? It’s a steel box, with pipes welded through. The bottom of the combustion chamber has a hole for the burner, the top. exhaust pipe. Sucks in air from a 12-volt computer fan.

Schematically, but I think it is clear. The burner heats the tubes, the air coming in on one side cold, heated, comes out the other side hot. And the CO2 goes out through the exhaust to the street. As a result, the air in the cabin is clean and warm. There’s no risk of burning or poisoning. In the picture the heat exchanger without fan.

The gas burner could be anything. Tourist primus, infrared, gas stove etc.

Since I wanted to use it more or less stationary (but with the possibility to remove it in summer), I integrated the burner completely inside the combustion chamber. This way I completely eliminated the burning of oxygen in the cabin.

At the bottom of the door I have a fresh air inlet, and on top of the ceiling forced extraction. The same fan from a 12 volt PC. The power consumption of these fans is 0.3A. It’s just negligible.

I moved the exhaust pipe to the side wall. because I had to get it under the seat.

This way I also freed up the plane above. And now you can heat food or tea on it.

But it was still dangerous. You could accidentally burn yourself. So I covered everything with a simple shield. It became more cultural and safe.

Speaking of safety. Burner with valve. In the absence of a flame closes the gas. There is also a sensor for gas leakage and excessive CO2

The exhaust comes out under the seat. The temperature of the pipe is still hot at this point, but your hand is already tolerated. But the first knee decided to make of stainless steel. Just in case.

Then connected to the usual plumbing pipe. Gray. Here it is already cold. The pipe is put only in parking lots, so it is quickly removable.

In the summer, you can remove it that did not get in the way. Can be taken on campsites. Install in a tent. Can be used for winter fishing. There’s just nothing to break.

On the downside. Can not set the temperature. Unaesthetic appearance.

In the photo the gas cylinder next to the exhaust pipe, not dangerous?

A stove as a craft I really like, I also like to do it myself, many do not understand this “better to buy.

Why is it that instead of tubes they did not realize a radiator of some kind, like a car radiator, and did not let warm air through it?? I think it would be more effective, as it is made for this purpose.

Well, or install more tubes but with a smaller diameter, I think the efficiency of this would increase, and it will reduce consumption.

On the hood, not to lose the surface for heating tea, you can make round slots like burners all this would be covered with a lid when not needed

You should put a gas alarm on the CO underneath. That’s the most dangerous thing.

There were a lot of options and heat in the pipes and the stove and stuff. but after a snowfall, you dig 30 meters of road. you get to the garage and no way to hell with it. I’ve sold my car and it’s even better in the snow even if the buses or cars get stuck. but getting stuck in a minibus is one thing, but digging it out is another, even though it’s four-wheel-drive. another. I’ll be selling the garage in the summer.- In the summer, it’s quiet and easy to get out. a barbecue telly and an internet comp. and in the back it’d be a fucking snowed-in storage space for summer stuff

The pipe, which runs between the seat, you can still wrap with asbestos rope for safety.

Sounds like an advanced hobo. The author, have you thought a little more and better work instead of this handicraft, so that 30,000 for a normal, efficient, technologically advanced and safe heater is not for you “insanely expensive”?

I must disappoint you: the oxygen is not burning. Even in the fluorine.

planar 4 kw about 20-22 thousand. It’s not that expensive. It eats 250 liters of dt per hour with negligible battery consumption. The size is much more compact, the installation is simple. And here you could even put 2 kW, which is even cheaper.

I don’t see the point in building one, but I’ll give you credit for doing it yourself.

Um, an infrared heater. heating the heat exchanger tubes.

Rules of choice in the store

When buying a heat exchanger in the store, guided by the following rules from the experts:

  • the heat exchanger must have all the protective elements that will not allow the open flame to escape outside, and will not allow the fisherman to be poisoned by the products of combustion;
  • it is important that the device will be able to work for a long time without refueling;
  • on the parameters of the efficiency directly depends on how quickly the device will heat the interior space in a tent of this or that size;
  • Do not choose too large and heavy models, it would be just uncomfortable to carry them on a fishing trip;
  • The presence of a special case for carrying in a set with a heat exchanger will be a big plus.

Making a heat exchanger in a tent for winter fishing with your own hands

To make winter fishing turn from a harsh survival to an interesting activity, it is important to approach correctly the issue of providing your own comfort and optimal temperature around you. For these purposes, many fishermen use different variants of heat exchangers in a tent for winter fishing. And if some people prefer to buy constructions, then professionals make them by hand.

The heater for the tent for fishing with his own hands

To fish from the ice in the heated tent in winter is more pleasant than in subzero temperatures. While your comrades are hiding from the wind and alternately warming their hands, you can sit with a fishing rod in your tent without a jacket. When camping in cold weather the heat exchanger allows you to comfortably spend the night in a heated tent. The device will evenly distribute the thermal energy from burning natural gas throughout the entire volume of the tent. To make a heat exchanger with your own hands is not difficult, having basic skills of metalwork.

Gas lamp

Power of the gas lamp is significantly lower than that of stoves or heaters with similar fuel. about half a kilowatt (and part of this power is spent on lighting), but for the small space in a tourist tent it is more than enough. Among other things. the lamp is safer than, say. a stove. Many tourists in this way is quite successful heating. As a bonus we have light inside the tent.

  • Advantages: good calorific value, ease of use.
  • Cons: Liquefied gas in the cold can freeze, relatively high cost of gas and the lamp itself.

Operating principle

The principle of operation of the device is based on the following scheme:

  • With the help of fuel (its type will be explained in detail later), which is transformed into heat energy during combustion, the tubes of heat exchanger are heated (it is a kind of radiator of heating).
  • The fan creates an air stream, which, passing through the hot pipes, takes away some of their heat, and already heated gets into the room, raising its temperature.
  • The combustion products of the fuel escape to the outside environment through the chimney.

This design is similar in its operating principle to the flame tube heat exchangers used in solid fuel boilers. If we simplify the principle of operation of the mechanism as much as possible, we can say that the air passing through the hot tubes is transformed into dry heat and heats the inner space of the room. Directly the heat exchanger, depending on certain parameters, can be effectively used for heating rooms of different volumes, both large and small.

How large a tent a particular device can heat depends on the following variables:
