Weight of imported cast iron radiators
Today there are many models of domestic imported production, all of them are classified in different ways. Many cast-iron batteries of the modern type are designer, retro-styled imitation. They can repeat the classic models in function and size, but are significantly superior in aesthetics, adding weight due to the artistic or molding patterns. Many have feet for floor mounting, such as Viadrus Termo (Czech Republic).

Most Russian manufacturers make cast iron batteries of the classical type. They were developed in the Soviet times and turned out to be quite successful. There are two main classifications. MS and PM. They do not differ practically in appearance, but have different characteristics.

Three versions of FM radiators. single-channel (PM1), two-channel (PM2) and three-channel (PM3). The size and quantity of channels directly influences the weight of one section.

Model designations indicate the dimensions of MS series radiators. The first number is the depth, the second. the height in millimeters. Also note that each manufacturer has its own configuration and design of sections. For example, the weight of one section of the Soviet cast iron battery MS-90 with a height of 500 mm can range from 6.3-6.7 kg.
Cast iron has a lot of undeniable advantages. It is durable, corrosion-resistant and has a high thermal efficiency. Cast iron radiators produced in retro-style amaze with their beauty. And modern conventional cast iron radiators look very attractive, favorably distinguished by a spectacular design.
Cast iron batteries have one drawback. their weight. How much does a cast-iron battery weigh, you can understand, taking into account that the weight of just one section ranges from 7 to 7.5 kg. Among the modern developments there are also lighter modifications. They have a section weight of only 5.7 kg.
Description of cast iron radiators
Cast iron radiators have been popular and in demand for two centuries. With the advent of more modern products made of steel, cast iron radiators began to be called old-style radiators. However, the status of outdated devices does not prevent such models from occupying a significant share of the market devices for space heating.
The new products that flooded this niche were not able to completely displace the variety of cast iron radiators. The latter are worthy competitors of the modern models. The features that they possess give them many advantages.

Production and design
For the manufacture of 1 section, or, in other words, 1 rib of the radiator of the old type, cast iron is used as the material. Regardless of the size of the future battery all sections are made separately.
Then the required number of finished sections are assembled into a single structure by means of nipples. The joints must be sealed with paronite or rubber gaskets.
Why do you need to know the weight of the radiators
This information is especially important for those who are building a new house and choose materials for the heating system:
- Buying radiators and deciding about their transportation, you need to choose a transport with a certain carrying capacity. If the house is large and you need a lot of heaters, it is unlikely to be able to transport them in a private vehicle, and even on a trailer. You have to order delivery or hire a truck.
- Less relevant, but important issue. unloading and delivery of radiators to the place of installation. Large cast-iron radiator is difficult to carry alone.
- The most important point concerns the installation of radiators. In modern frame houses, buildings of aerocrete, CIP-panels and other similar materials, the walls may not hold heavily loaded fixtures. Knowing the weight of one section of cast iron battery and their required amount for heating of each room, you can install 2-3 small batteries instead of one large or choose a design with a floor support.
Basic characteristics of the classic radiator
Standard cast iron radiator consists of 4-10 separate sections. Its size depends on the choice of thermal regime in the room and the architectural features of the house.
Despite the difficulties that arise when installing a heavy cast iron heating radiator, it is still not considered the main problem. The main task is to perform the correct installation of the battery. To carry it out, it is not enough to know only the mass of the product, it is necessary to take into account the following points:
- Distance between axes. Standard models can have 350 or 500 mm. High-height radiators are characterized by the proportional size between the axes.
- Depth. Standard sizes 92, 99, 110 mm.
- Width of the section. Dimensions are in a slightly larger range. 35 60 mm.
- Volume of the section. This is the amount of coolant that is needed to completely fill the radiator element. Volume is depending on the size of the section. Average values range from 1 to 4 liters.
An important problem of installing a cast-iron battery of the classical type is that it is designed only to be mounted on the wall. At the same time, most homes today are made of porous materials, such as aerated concrete, aerated concrete, as well as SIP-panels with foam filling. These walls require special fastening of a complex design with multipoint fixing, which is unlikely to be to your liking.
The mass of standard heating devices
Both traditional and designer copies are united by the material of manufacture, which is cast iron.
And now everywhere you can find the classic radiators in the form of an accordion, installed
- In schools and pre-school educational institutions;
- in outpatient departments and hospitals;
- In the premises of the housing stock. apartments, private houses, dormitories;
- In public and state institutions.
Usually it’s models MS-140 or MS-90, since in the past years there were no other mass produced heaters. Small series are represented by cast iron products NM-150, RKSH, Minsk. 1110 and others, but today they are no longer produced. So what is the weight of one section of an old cast iron battery? And in this case, there is no exact figure. This is explained by the fact that this value depends on the parameters of the section.
For example, a battery series MS-140 comes in two modifications, depending on the axial spacing, which is 300 or 500 millimeters. If we are talking about a model MS-140-300, then the average weight of the section of about 5.7 kg, and when it comes to the device MS-140-500, then 7.1 kg.
Often you can find a product of the MS-90 series, whose weight of the cast-iron radiator section is 6.5 kilograms at a distance between the axes of 500 millimeters. The difference between models MC-90 and 140 is in different depth of sections.
Can we consider that the weight of radiators of these popular series, equal to 6.5, 5.7 and 7.1 kilograms, is final? The answer is no and there is an explanation. The fact that the current GOST 8690-94, which is the normative document governing the production of batteries of cast-iron alloys, indicates their basic dimensions.
Regarding how much a section of an old-style cast iron radiator weighs, this standard specifies the specific weight of. 49,5 kg/kW. This standard value applies to radiators that are designed to operate in heating systems with a heating medium temperature not exceeding 150 degrees Celsius and a maximum working pressure of 0.9 MPa (9 kgf/cm²).
In the manufacture of heating devices manufacturers must ensure product compliance with these values, but how much does one section of the cast-iron battery, GOST does not regulate. As a result, the mass of radiators produced by different factories differs.

Today, the best-known products of several industrial enterprises, which produce modifications of the MS-140 series and devices of their own design. Among them: the Belarusian factory of heating equipment, the Russian “Dekart” and “Santekhilit” and others.
How much does a cast-iron battery weigh?
Weight of cast-iron battery, depending on the number of sections, is from 7.1 kg to 71 kg.
Cast-iron radiator. one of the iconic inventions of the Soviet era. An ordinary heating device has become the hero of anecdotes, the character of films. Although, what, one would think, could be special in an ordinary heating device?
Since the invention of the water heating system in Ancient Rome, mankind has not advanced much in the quality of heating our own homes. The heating devices looked like common coils, but they did not retain heat for long and the houses of both ordinary citizens and the palace nobility were still cold and damp.
Weight of cast-iron radiators, depending on the number of sections, ranges from 7.1 kg to 71 kg.
In form, it was not like the radiators that residents are accustomed to seeing in the apartments of apartment buildings. It was a tube of large diameter, at the ends of which there were disk-shaped protrusions that were not part of the heating system. As a casting material cast iron was not chosen by chance, in the 19th century the steel and iron-making industry was actively developing that is why the foundry masters and engineers knew a lot about their business: they valued the material for its resistance to external factors, for its “long life” and good thermal insulation properties.
Thanks to these parameters, the cast iron radiator has “caught on” in Russia. Changing the shape, size and weight, it has acquired today unchanged appearance and proven production technology.
Cast iron radiators: the weight of a single section
Radiators made of cast iron squeezed into the market under the influx of modern developments in the field of heating devices, but still remain a serious competitor to the novelties. When choosing, it is important to consider the weight of the cast iron radiator, since this parameter affects the complexity of installation and installation principles.
In the classical sectional radiator the weight of 1 element is 7.5 kg, that is, the standard design of 7 elements will weigh more than 50 kg.

This raises two problems:
- reliable wall mounting is difficult to install if the walls are made of porous lightweight blocks or are a frame construction. it will be necessary to install the heating device on the floor;
- to carry the battery must be two and very carefully, because from the blows in the fragile cast iron microcracks appear, which expand under the influence of the heated coolant. over time, this provokes the depressurization of the heating device.
