Fan will not turn to the sides

How to fix a floor fan if it stops turning (turning sideways)? It is all about the crank, the fixing screws of which can come loose or unscrew. To find out you need to disassemble the motor housing. If the rotation of the housing is delayed or comes to a complete stop while the unit is running, check the gears in the gearbox for engagement. It is also necessary to check the gearbox switch itself, namely its upward and downward movement.

Take apart the gear box and remove the main gear. The shaft will also have to be pulled out. Lubricate all moving parts and reassemble. If the gears are badly worn, they need to be replaced, although it is difficult to find analogues of broken parts for the fan. In this case, you will have to assemble the unit without the reducer and use the cooler in the normal mode, when the air masses will move in the same direction.

Floor Fan Repair Example

I had to repair an electric floor fan model Scarlett SC-175. When you turn on the fan motor hummed but the blades didn’t rotate. Checking the impeller for freedom of rotation confirmed the suspicion, it was spinning tight. Most likely the grease has thickened.

In order to lubricate the motor fan must be disassembled. First it is necessary to remove the impeller, for this purpose it is enough to unscrew the round nut fixing it, turning it clockwise. To prevent the nut from being unscrewed by the rotation of the blades, there is a left-hand thread.

After removing the impeller the second plastic nut holding the protective shield will open. It has a standard right hand thread and is unscrewed counterclockwise.

Then unscrew the two screws that hold the front cover. At the same time you can remove with a small flat screwdriver unclamping washer, on which the impeller rests during fixation.

To remove the rear fan cover, you must first remove the handle to activate the horizontal movement of the fan. It may be screwed on with a self-tapping screw or inserted tightly.

Before disassembling the motor, you need to carefully inspect it, because the rotation of the rotor may be difficult because of clinging to the stator. In addition, if the rotation of the fan is due to the main and not an auxiliary motor, the problem may be hidden in the worm gear.

Disassembly of the worm gearbox of the fan head horizontally swiveling device does not reveal any malfunction. The grease was sufficient, the gears are in good condition. When disassembling the gearbox, you must pay attention to the two spring-loaded balls, which unknowingly I broke, I had to look for a long time.

Gearbox was assembled before disassembling motor. Loosen the four long screws to disassemble the motor. Be careful not to damage the stator windings made of thin copper wire. The windings in Chinese fans are not impregnated with lacquer and are therefore vulnerable to mechanical stresses.

Picture shows fan motor with front cover removed. The bearing is removed from the cover along with the shaft when disassembling.

The bearing was sitting so snugly on the motor shaft because of grease buildup that I had to use pliers to remove it.

Grease thickened with dirt is best removed with “white spirit” solvent, which is purified gasoline. If you don’t have that handy, alcohol, acetone, gasoline, and even laundry detergent or laundry soap will do.

The inner cavity of the bearing is best cleaned with a rag soaked in solvent coiled on tweezers or a screwdriver making reciprocating motion with simultaneous rotation.

After removing the old grease place the bearing sleeve back on the shaft. It should be easy to put on and rotate with little or no play. If the bearing passes the test, then you can begin to lubricate.

For the lubrication of slide bearings, from my experience, graphite grease is suitable, which is solidol mixed with graphite powder. After lubricating the noisy computer coolers with graphite grease, they did not have to be relubricated, even after years of operation.

Now I lubricate all gears and slide bearings only with graphite grease. If no such grease is available, any other grease will do, even car engine oil.

You have to grease both bearings, even if one of them works well. The grease is applied with a thin layer both on the inner surface of the bush and at the place where it is mounted on the shaft.

Particulars of assembling a Scarlett blender

First you need to put the power cord with the plug through the housing and then installed in the grooves of the motor rings board also put in the blender housing.

Next, insert the electric motor as far as it will go, ensuring that the circuit board fits into the slots provided for it in the housing.

The motor is secured by inserting the tubular part as far as it will go into the blender body. In doing so, the latches should enter the grooves. Next install the rest of the parts on the side of the cord, except the keys.

The keys act on the keys through tubular struts of varying lengths that are not fixed in any way, so when installing the keys these tubes easily fell off.

I had to grease them inside on the side of the installation on the buttons with Moment glue, put them on the pushers of the buttons, wait until the glue seizes up and only then install, pressing evenly, the keys.

After self-repair and reassembly, the blender was tested in real operating conditions. There is no comment on its operation.

Not everyone understands electronics, so if the motor is serviceable, you can replace the jumper, which I set when testing the motor, in place of the keys to install any switch of pushbutton type, designed for a switching current of not less than 5A. True, you will lose the opportunity to control the motor rotation speed, but you can do without this function.

Exhaust fan. a device that is increasingly seen in the homes of our fellow citizens. There are several reasons for this. First, in recent years, thanks to a significant reduction in the cost of production of such devices, almost everyone can afford such a purchase. Secondly, this electric appliance, of course, is a very useful acquisition for apartments and private houses.

assemble, scarlett, table

Electric diagram of a domestic fan and its peculiarities

The main purpose of an exhaust fan is to provide forced, artificial air circulation in rooms where natural circulation is difficult or insufficient. A good example of such a room is a bathroom. In apartment buildings, as a rule, this room is located far from external load-bearing walls, and, therefore, air circulation in them is difficult. If you add to this high humidity and arising from it mold, it immediately becomes clear that the extractor fan in the bathroom. is not just a tribute to fashion, and a real necessity.

In order to connect the fan, you need to know a few little nuances. It should be understood that the electrical connection diagram of the fan is largely determined by the place of installation and the presence of features in his design.

Connection with a built-in switch. The easiest circuit. The 220V power supply is connected to the device. Switching on and off the fan is due to the built-in switch in the device.

Connection with a switch. Using this diagram, turning on and off the fan is done with a special switch. As a rule, it is located in front of the entrance to the room. For such connection it is necessary to lay two cables. one from the junction box to the switch, the second. to the appliance itself.

Fan connection with a timer. The peculiarity of these devices is that they do not turn off immediately, but after a certain time. This is done by a special time relay, which automatically turns off the device after a predetermined period of time (usually one minute to half an hour). In this connection, there is one wire to the switch and two to the device.

Connecting a fan with a humidity sensor. The electric diagram of fan control can include a humidity sensor that measures readings in real time and, according to a specified program, controls the operation of the device: turns it on when the humidity increases and turns it off when it reaches optimum values. Wiring diagram of the device is similar to that needed to connect a fan with a timer.

Most of the fans consist of switching circuits, starting circuit, motor windings. The elements of the list concerns the repair. Often, domestic models use a trivial coil, wound with copper wire with lacquer insulation. Let’s consider today how to do the repair of fans with your own hands, the inductance is burned out, the wire is torn because of the carelessness of the operator. To restore the coil, a good old-fashioned device is used, despite its simplicity, you can not get it in the store. With the mechanism of winding inductance, using an electric motor, working with the handles.

Industrial fans have a different way, unlike domestic fans more often centrifugal. Winding collector, asynchronous motor at home can not be restored, it is difficult to do. The craftsman repeats the factory production cycle in your own country.

Repair of household fan by the example of Skarlet

If your domestic fan breaks do not rush to have it repaired let alone throw it away. In some cases the defects are so simple that they do not require any special professional skills. In such circumstances, repair the fan with their own hands does not take much time, and the savings are substantial. Calling a master at home now in some services costs not less than 300, not to mention the work, replacement of parts and the cost of the parts themselves in the services.

The fan does not rotate. Use a tester or multimeter to check for voltage. Or you can include any functioning household appliance (iron, cell phone charger, etc.) to diagnose the serviceability of the outlet.

After making sure there is power to the outlet, unscrew the cover of the box with the switch buttons on the fan stand.

As the fan doesn’t turn on the timer and any of the speed buttons (0;1;2;3), it is logical to assume that there is no voltage to the switch or that the motor is defective.

In the box you will see the switch of speed of rotation of the electric motor and a mechanical timer (time relay). One wire of the power supply goes directly to the contact of the electric motor, the second through a timer and 4 button switch to the various windings of the motor. The first thing to check is the reliability of the switch contacts and the integrity of the wires.

This can be done with a multimeter, checking the voltage at the output of the timer. To do this, its switch should be in the “ON” position. Then consistently turn on the speed buttons, checking the output voltage of each button.

For safety purposes it is recommended that continuity should be checked using a multimeter, on a continuity test, without connecting the fan to the mains.

In our case the test shows that there is no circuit through the timer, so the room fan does not work due to a fault in the contact group of the timer.

The contacts are two copper plates that are closed by an actuator under pressure from a rotating timer switch disc. When the set time is counted, the actuator enters the slot on the disc opening the contacts. The lack of an electrical circuit can be caused by wear on the drive mechanism that does not hold the plates sufficiently or by oxidized contacts.

Troubleshooting Methods

The housing of the timer is transparent and all mechanical gears, drive and contact positions are visible. The difficulty of repairing the timer yourself is that it is not recommended to unscrew and open the lid.

The timer gear mechanism has a wound-up spring, the pinion axes are pressed in the seats of the top cover, which has locking elements. Opening the cover will release the spring, the gears will unwind and fly in different directions. Such repair of a room fan should be carried out with the skills of a watchmaker.

In domestic conditions it is easier to carefully drill a hole Ø 5-8mm over the contacts through which you can tweezers to bend the plates or clean the contacts. The hole will not affect the timer operation, then it can be sealed with a transparent adhesive tape. After reconnecting the contact, turn on the fan and check the work in all modes, if the result is positive assemble the construction in its original state.

If it is impossible to repair the timer actuators and contacts, you can exclude it from the circuit by connecting the wire directly to the input terminal on the “0” button of the speed switch. At this point the repair of the fan is complete.

Step by step guide on assembling the floor fan

There are products from different manufacturers on the market. Installation of models differs slightly, for this reason it is possible to distinguish its general scheme. Conventionally the process of how to assemble the fan can be divided into 3 steps:

This is due to the peculiarities of the product design. One of the variants is demonstrated on the video. You can start the process by assembling the top or bottom. there is no difference.

Axial floor units consist of the following elements:

Models may additionally contain air ionizers, remote control, but this does not affect their installation.

Assembly of the support

The instructions for assembling the lower part of the product are as follows:

  • the device is unpacked;
  • if the support is made as a cross support, the crossbars are inserted into each other perpendicularly;
  • Connect them and the bottom of the vertical riser with the tube inside with four bolts;
  • The end caps are installed on the ends of the supports, with which the device will be in contact with the floor;
  • Extend the telescopic tube and fix it by means of a plastic nut at the required height.

The other type of support, the disk type, is also fastened with bolts and nuts.

Assembly of the upper part of the structure

Then assemble in the following sequence:

  • the back grid of the cowl is fastened on the drive part, seating it in the grooves and tightening with a nut;
  • push the wheel with the blades onto the motor axle precisely according to the socket;
  • fix it with the special nut;
  • install and fasten the front grill of the fan guard;
  • insert the tube into the motor unit and secure it to the rack with a locking screw located at the junction of these parts.

There are variants, where the shaft seat is without grooves and then the impeller is fixed with a screw. If the motor is disconnected from the unit with buttons, then a screw (or bolt and nut) connects them.

Assembly of fans from different manufacturers is identical. You can verify this by looking at the following

After all the manipulations considered the device is ready for operation. the assembled fan blades should rotate freely by hand. When switching on, the unit should work without excessive noise and strange odors (burning rubber), in the modes provided for in the manual. If this does not happen, then you should contact the store for a replacement or refund. To avoid misunderstandings, it is necessary when buying to understand the presence of all the required components and the serviceability of the product.
