Connecting the hob safely
The first concern for anyone buying a gas cooktop in a convenience store or online is how to connect it securely.
Considering the issues of safety when connecting a hob in the kitchen of a typical St. Petersburg apartment first of all we should consider the three most common cases of hob location: 1. No oven will be installed under the hob. 2. An electric oven is or will be installed under the hob. 3. A gas oven will be installed under the cooking surface.
Why it matters ? The oven is a heated appliance that either burns gas or has an electric heating element that generates heat. The gas cooktop is always connected on the back side, connected where the heat from the oven is released.
The first option is when there is no oven under the cooker hob is the safest. The hob in this case is best connected with a rubber gas hose. The rubber hose is the most flexible of all, it is not able to crush at a large bend (in contrast to the PVC hose), has a low cost. Accordingly, if you have, for example, drawers and pull-outs under the hob. A rubber hose for gas is just the thing to open them without any problems.
The second option is when under the stove hob will be an electric oven also safe. An electric oven poses far less of a danger to the hob above it than a gas oven (provided the oven is in good working order). In this configuration, the cooker and hob can be connected by both a bellows gas hose (stainless steel) and a rubber gas hose, the gas hose and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is not desirable because it is not temperature-resistant and even a slight heating causes its shrinkage.
The third alternative. the hob above the gas oven without any separating elements between them. is the most dangerous and is banned in the European Union, for example. If you have chosen this arrangement of the gas appliances, the gas supply to the hob and the oven must be provided with a supply element made of non-flammable material, meaning the so-called bellows gas hose, which in fact is not a hose and is a corrugated stainless steel pipe. The metal pipe will not melt or catch fire even when placed directly over the gas flame (t=650 C).
The above is necessary because of the following: The gas oven, which is essentially a stove burzhuyka chimney has no chimney, where do the products of combustion in the absence of a chimney ? Inside the gas oven there is an exhaust fan (not to be confused with the electric oven’s internal circulation fan, this fan provides convection inside the oven) which blows combustion products into a narrow slot located above the oven door, from which the following is clear: the exhaust fan is electric and if there is no power supply (the light in the apartment is out or even worse, the electric power supply to the oven only (difficult to spot in time)) the fan will not work, product !
In theory, when properly designed, a gas oven should have a solenoid valve that closes the gas supply to the nozzle when there is no electrical power, but only expensive (expensive as it is) models of gas ovens have such a useful safety option.
Also critical when connecting a gas hob or gas oven is to ensure that there is no electrical contact between the gas appliance and the gas distribution system of the apartment building. This is important for the following reason: the electrical power supply to the house and its distribution in the house is three-phase (380 V). Electric power input in an apartment is single-phase (220 V) correspondingly the house electric wiring is carried out according to the following scheme: first floor of the house phase 1, second floor phase 2, third floor phase 3, fourth floor phase 1 and so on, but the zero point of all apartments is common. The negative result of this scheme of distribution of electric energy is the following: zero is not in fact zero, it due to skewed phases caused by uneven load on the phases, there is always a voltage of 1 to 9 volts relative to earth. Gas pipe bringing gas to the house is underground and is in fact almost a perfect grounding. In apartments of Soviet-era houses there is no grounding, and all gas stoves and ovens (electric and gas) are made according to European ISO standards, which require, among other things, grounding of the housing of the household appliance. Home “masters” electricians drags a zero from the electrical panel of an apartment to the ground contacts of electrical outlets and delirious that it is grounded. As a result, the consequences are unfortunate, the voltage at ground zero wiring in the apartment by bellows gas line forms an electrical circuit to ground. The result of this (at best) will be a burnout of the contacts of the electrical socket or electrical plug of the gas hob. To avoid this, kind people have invented a special isolator that is installed (usually) between the gas faucet of the apartment and the bellows gas line supplying gas to the gas cooking surface.

How to connect a gas cooktop.
The gas cooktop looks like a simple device for cooking, which, when connected, should not cause much difficulty in performing the work. But it’s not so easy. The point is that this kind of equipment is connected to the gas supply system, so the work on connecting the cooker hob to the gas must be carried out with compliance with all state standards and technical safety measures. We will try to describe the whole process as correctly as possible, but we strongly recommend that you do not install it yourself, but resort to the help of professionals.
- Gas hose;
- Two adjustable wrenches. can be gas;
- Tape-fum for sealing threaded joints;
- Soap or any other soapy solution to check the tightness of the connection.
A little theory about connecting the hob.
The hob must be installed in a dry and well-ventilated room. The kitchen must have a ventilation duct for the exhaust of combustion products. This exhaust system consists of a grill and a ventilation hood.
In the room where the surface will be installed, should be well provided with air flow. Quantity of required air for the stove 2 m 3 /h per 1 kW burner power. The minimum space from the gas cooker hob to the wall must be at least 130 mm. If this distance is not maintained, there is a chance of burning and melting the plastic or furniture.
Step Before proceeding to install the hob, whether gas or electric, it is necessary to free and clean the surface around the mounting hole, in the countertop from sawdust and debris. Degrease with soap and wipe with a paper towel. Allow to dry.
Step Apply a rectangular gasket around the edge of the mounting holes. Press the gasket on all four edges until it adheres completely to the countertop surface. Insulating foam gasket comes with the surface. Do not use double-sided adhesive tape for this purpose. If you lost the adhesive tape when installing the cooktop, you can always get it at GazService’s online store.
Step How to connect the cooktop to the gas? It’s simple. Thread the supply lines, such as the gas hose, electrical cord through the mounting holes in the countertop.
Step Slowly lower the surface into the pre-cut hole, making sure the edges of the gas panel rest evenly on the gasket around all four edges. A small gap can let water and other liquids into the oven. cause a short circuit. The presence of moisture under the panel can develop mold and peeling edges of furniture.
Step Place the surface clamps on the threaded bolts so that the long part of the bracket goes under the worktop. Hold the brackets in place, with your other hand screw the screws clockwise until they are fully tightened. Do not overdo it and do not twist the bolt.
Connection of the hob to cylinders containing gas or to an existing gas system, as well as the subsequent overhaul of cooker hobs may only be performed by a qualified technician authorized to work with gas appliances, while observing all safety regulations.
For a tight connection to the gas supply system, apply flex tape to all threaded joints, both on the hob and on the gas riser. Insert a paronite gasket on both sides of the gas hose.
Step Screw the hose connectors to the hob and the gas pipe, turn clockwise until the nut stops, then tighten the nut half a turn with a wrench. In this case, you should not exert too much effort, as there is a chance to press the paronite gasket and leave a gas leak.
The gas panel has a threaded pipe connection with diameter G1/2”, which is used for connection to the gas system. For liquid gas (propane butane), there is a hose nozzle on the end Ø 8 x 1 mm. The wire that conducts the gas must not touch the metal parts of the covering.
Step After completing the installation of the surface should be checked for leaks at all joints, using, for example, soapy water. To make the soap solution, mix liquid soap and water in a bucket and stir with a sponge until a smooth foam forms.
Step Open the gas valve by turning the knob on the downpipe so that the knob is parallel to the pipe. Squeeze the sponge and apply the foam to the hose. If the foam begins to bubble, or if you smell a sulfurous odor of gas, close the faucet and tighten the nut. Check again, repeating these steps until the leak disappears.
Step Plug the electrical cord of the surface into the socket. Electricity is needed to activate the electrical ignition of the surface. The outlet must be grounded.
Gas appliances must be replaced and connected after notifying the gas service. Observe the rules and regulations for installation. First choose the place of installation.
The panel is installed near the gas mains. The distance varies depending on the length of the flexible hose. When you need to change the layout and relocate the gas pipe, you must agree with the gas company. Only its specialists carry out these actions.
The size of the hob must match the size of the countertop in which it is planned to be mounted. The distance from the edge to the installed device should not be less than 5 cm. Choose a surface thickness of at least 38 mm for installation.
If the countertop is made of particle board, fibreboard or wood, then the mortise is carried out independently. Material made of artificial stone is trusted to a professional.
Tip. Before installation, study the technical documentation for the device, it gives a template, recommendations for marking the countertop and the size of the kerf.
For self-tapping will require an electric jigsaw and a drill with a drill. First the surface is marked out. To do this, the panel is placed against the surface and outline it. Or use a more accurate version, which requires calculation of the center.
- On the surface, the boundaries of the internal space of the cabinet are marked. The device will be built into it.
- From the corners of the marked out space diagonal lines are drawn and their intersection is the center of the surface.
- Perpendicular and parallel to the mowing line are drawn through the center and the panel dimensions are marked on them.
- Mowing line straight lines are drawn through the marks. a rectangle is obtained which corresponds to the size of the device.
After the contour is outlined, it is cut out. Make holes in the corners of the rectangle using a drill. Insert the jigsaw blade into them, leading in a straight line from corner to corner. Cover the edges of the worktop with masking tape to avoid chipping.
After the holes are made, a fitting is made. The edges of the worktop are sanded and vacuumed. Then prepare the appliance. Install nozzles, fix the sanitary corner and sealant gasket. Fix the nut on the inlet, which must be used for the flexible connection. Then the mounting strips, which are included in the package, are attached to the panel, and the installation is performed.
- Apply sealant to the kerf to protect the edges from moisture and crumbling.
- The hob is placed in the hole and aligned.
- Fixing elements, which are located at the bottom of the device, clamp to the tabletop and tighten.
- Carefully trim the exposed sealant with a knife.
Steps of connecting a gas cooktop
The process of installing the equipment takes no more than an hour, most of the time is spent on preparatory work and calling the master to obtain a conclusion.
Behind each stage is a lot of preparatory activities: the purchase of gas equipment and related materials, the coordination of specialist call time, preparing the kitchen modules for the insertion of devices. Let’s analyze each stage separately to prevent possible mistakes.
Step 1 Preparation of equipment and tools
We advise to buy the hob in advance. If this is not possible, then you need to know the exact dimensions. Generally, all 4-burner models comply with the standard 5060 cm (/- 2 cm), 3- and 2-burner models, respectively, smaller in width.
In addition to the gas equipment you will need to buy the following materials:
Fixing elements for installation are usually supplied with the kit, so they do not need to buy.
From the tools will need a standard set, which usually has every home master: a pair of gas wrenches, screwdriver, pliers. If you need to cut a metal pipe, it is the responsibility of the service company. you must not do any work with the gas pipes yourself.
Step 2 cut out the hole in the worktop
Knowing the exact dimensions of the hob, you can make a hole in the countertop in advance. Of course, the factory would cope with it more professionally, because it is very important to cut a neat rectangle with right angles and even sides.
Help furniture makers come in handy when the countertop is not made of particleboard, fibreboard or wood, but of a more durable material. artificial stone.
If you decide to make a hole yourself, then use a light and productive tool. such as an electric jigsaw.
- Clarify again the dimensions of the panel, study the installation diagram.
- Make a marking on the countertop with the recommended distance from the wall.
- Put a paper adhesive tape around the perimeter and use a pencil or marker to trace the outline of the part that must be removed.
- Use the jigsaw to cut the hole. It is recommended to make the short cut first, then the one at the wall, and lastly the side cuts.
- Remove the cut piece of countertop.
- If you have the panel on hand, immediately make a “fitting”.
If the countertop material is crumbling in the cut areas, you can treat the edges with any adhesive composition, but first need to sand and vacuum. For particleboard use sanitary silicone. it additionally protects the edges from moisture.
You can also use thermal foil or a reflector made of aluminum tape to prevent the countertop from being exposed to high temperatures.
Step 3 connect the panel to the electricity
Modern cooktops are equipped with an electric ignition function, so a power socket will need to be installed.

Often an electric oven is installed together with the gas stove hob. To connect an appliance up to 3.5 kW you will need:
- three-core cable Vvg-p 2.5 mm;
- 16A socket outlet with grounding;
- If there is no connecting wire in the kit. then the cable pvs 32.5 mm and the plug.
A heavy-duty oven requires a 3.5 mm cable and a 40 A socket.
According to the standards, the height of the socket installation. no higher than 90 cm, and it must not be at the same level with the hob.
For protection in the switchboard install a separate RCD or difautomatic device. separately on the line of gas equipment for cooking.
Mounting the socket is a standard way: first of all fix mounting box in the wall, then attach the terminals, above fix a decorative panel. Read more about installing outlets for electric stoves in this material.
- The manufacturer recommends using the services of a professional electrician;
- on the underside of the device is a plate with the technical specifications of the electrical system, from which you can not deviate;
- Electric cable must not be twisted, crimped, laid near sharp corners;
- After installation all conductive parts must be insulated and secured against accidental contact.
Subsequent repair work should be carried out only with the appliance disconnected from the mains.
Step 4 connect the panel to the gas mains
To properly connect the hob to the gas requires a flexible adapter. a hose no longer than 2 m. Often, because of the inconvenient layout, use longer hoses, but this is prohibited by the rules of operation of gas equipment.
You can find on sale a variety of gas lines with fabric, rubber and metal braid. Bellows hoses are becoming increasingly popular, which are resistant to wear and longer life.
In addition to the hose, a dielectric insert is required. It is installed on the pipe in front of the cut-off valve.
Dielectric serves as a means of security. protects against stray currents as equipment and users.
Assuming that the coupling is already installed, then proceed as follows:
- We connect the gas hose to the dielectric. If not. then to a metal pipe right after the tap. For a tight connection we use tape or Fum tape.
- On the underside of the panel we find a small threaded socket and screw on the hose in the same way.
You do not need to do anything else.
If you want to make a connection at the same time gas cooktop and oven, you should use two lines. But note that the connection through the tee is not welcomed by all representatives of the gas station! For example, employees of Mosgaz write a prescription and insist on the wiring of the gas pipe.
This way of connection is considered more correct for two reasons:
- the number of threaded connections is reduced, thereby increasing tightness and safety;
- Cut-off valves are installed on both outlets. if a tee is used, one common valve is retained.

Remember that all the actions if you have decided to connect yourself must be agreed with the employees of Gaze or Oblgaz. then there will be no unpredictable situations that end in costly repairs.
Step 5 check for leaks and testing
You can check the tightness of screw connections by yourself. To do this, you need to arm yourself with a brush and cover them with a soapy solution.
But the final conclusions will be made by the inspector. he will also check the connection for leaks, and then draw a conclusion, which will include the date of visit, brands and serial numbers of gas equipment, type of connection.
It is not recommended to start before the gas service employee arrives, in case of an accidental leakage all responsibility is on the shoulders of the owner of the dwelling. But the main thing. it is still the safety of family and friends, so you should not rush and take risks.

Work with the worktop
A relevant point in the event is the correct dimensioning. Usually a template is included with the plate itself. It is just what will be used to make a kerf in the countertop. However, it is better to check everything again. No one is safe from mistakes.
It is important to choose the right location for the future built-in panel. Focusing on the role of the object in the design of the interior of the kitchen, you should not forget that:
- Fresh air must be available.
- Make sure that no water gets on the surface.
- The panel must necessarily be placed at a safe distance from the furniture in the kitchen.
How to make a correct kerf? To do this, the outline of the future appliance is drawn on the countertop. Then all that remains is to cut it out using a wood saw. A little trick from the experts. It is best to step 1-1.2 inward from the edges of the drawn contour when working. Next, the future “landing” place is treated with a special sealant (it is better to choose silicone. it is the most moisture resistant). Such a measure will protect the material from moisture penetration.
How to connect the gas Hob: moving on to installation
Before you begin direct work on the connection, you need to inspect the device itself. It is important that it also has no mechanical damage (this can be dangerous). If no such errors are found, you can safely get down to work. The whole process will take place as follows:
Connecting the hob to the gas: procedure
The first and main point is the correct sizing of the hole in the countertop. As a rule, the hob comes with a template.
Important! You must double-check that the dimensions are correct, before sawing the worktop. No one is safe from inaccuracies, if these occur accidentally.
It is equally important to correctly determine the location of the hob. It has these requirements:
To properly cut a hole for the hob, place a template on the countertop and draw its outline. Next, carefully cut the hole with a saw. The next step is to treat the landing place with sealant. It will protect the material from exposure to moisture.
Important! To keep you comfortable and safe in the kitchen, follow our recommendations about how to keep the hood distance from the gas stove.
Before you connect your gas cooktop, take a good look at the appliance. It is important that it is not damaged. Otherwise a dangerous situation could arise. The installation procedure is as follows:
- Close the gas tap.
- Insert the appliance into the pre-assembled socket.
- Connect the hose to the gas line inlet faucet. Use a special winding to prevent leaks.
- Connect the opposite end of the hose to the appliance outlet, which is specifically designed to connect. Note that the hob has 2 places for connection. One of them is for bottled gas. All the details are set out in the instructions, which should be studied in advance.
- Apply a soap solution to the coil surface.
- Once connected, open the gas tap. If no bubbles appear in the place where the soap solution is applied, then everything is done correctly.
- Turn on the burners one by one for about a minute to allow the air to escape. Only then can the burner be restarted.
Important! To avoid misalignment, control the correct installation of the device using a level.
Step-by-step instructions for connecting the gas cooktop
In order to connect the gas cooking surface, it is recommended to officially contact specialized organizations that have a license and certain documents to perform these types of work. If you decide to do the wiring and installation of a gas cooktop, you need to understand the important question: how to properly connect a gas cooktop. It is also imperative to know safety precautions and strictly follow the instructions.
Rules for connecting a gas cooktop to the main gas line
The emergence of hobs on the market has made it possible to increase the functionality of the working area of even the smallest kitchens. Therefore, these appliances are very popular today. Manufacturers offer both electric and gas models, so you can choose for your needs any of them. There are no problems with electrical appliances, or rather with their connection. All you need is a proper outlet. But the connection of a gas cooktop. it is special requirements and strict rules, which everyone should know about. So let’s understand this topic.
How to proceed?
Any of the steps described below you will take at your own risk. The site administration is not responsible for any negative consequences resulting from this installation. For work you will need:
To properly connect the hob, you first need to choose a place of installation. Most often try to bring the equipment close to the gas mains. But if there will be (or can be) a redesign, use bellows corrugated hoses. Next, using a cutting tool in the countertop prepare a hole of the required size. Remove all dust and remaining sawdust.
It is better, of course, to contact immediately to the gas company, so as not to suffer from mistakes as much as possible. But if you still work by yourself, the line of the cut should be treated with sealants. Then the moisture will not penetrate between the layers of the countertop.
The next step. gluing on the perimeter of the notch special foam tape. It is either taken from the delivery set or bought separately in specialized stores of gas equipment.
Next, you need to connect one end of the flexible hose to the main pipe or cylinder. The opposite end is connected to the hob inlet.The necessary hole is at the bottom of the household appliance.
Therefore, when connecting the gas hoses to the built-in model, you must open the doors and remove the shelves on the corresponding cabinet. Screw the hose tightly, it must be sealed with FUM tape. Then turn the valve to the “fully open” position. Do not ignite the burners.
It is necessary to cover all connections with a soapy solution. Normally no bubbles should appear. But let’s assume the foam did show up. Then it is necessary to tighten the nut in the problem place again. Then check it again with the foamer. Repeat the procedure until there are no more even small gas bubbles.
But you can’t tighten the nuts all the way down. excessive force using gaskets made of paronite is especially dangerous. Such gaskets, despite its fragility, can quite replace FUM-tape. But this is not the end of the installation.
Most standard kits include two types of nozzles. The one with a thicker hole is for the main gas. The one with the smaller inlet is for connecting to the cylinders. It is always the default to put the nozzle for connecting to the gas line. If it is necessary to change it, you can also use wrenches, which are included in the set.
Gas hobs with electric ignition must be connected to the mains. Near the appliance you must put a socket. Its allowable load is defined very carefully. Ideally, not only should this socket be able to carry the maximum current drawn, but it should have a power reserve of about 20%. The hobs are always installed into thick worktops (the wood layer must be at least 3.8 cm).
If you try to install the panel on a thin base, the system can fail suddenly. According to standard rules, stoves with electrical ignition are installed with any hoses, except those that have a braided metal. No matter how good these hoses are, they can cause a fire and gas explosion if a short circuit occurs.

Recommendation: Before beginning all work, it is necessary to carefully study the diagram of the panel. And make yourself another diagram. this time describing all the connections.
