What is the difficulty
The oriented chipboard itself boasts characteristics such as flexibility, strength and water resistance in cases where a water-resistant type of panel is used. At the same time, the outer side of the parts is quite smooth and does not have too good adhesion. The latter feature becomes a problem, since the tiles simply do not “stick” to the surface.
The second difficulty is that the chip panel compared to tile or porcelain tiles will be quite flexible, while the tiles are quite rigid and will not bend. When creating a construction from such different materials in terms of their properties, there is not too good connection and the outer coating does not hold well on the base. There are several ways to solve existing problems:
- Improve adhesion with different primer compounds and use tile bonding solutions designed specifically for wooden substrates.
- Fasten to the surface of the panel from the chips metal mesh, which will serve as a base for the adhesive solution (this method is more suitable for work on the walls).
- Create a solid base for fixing the oriented chipboards themselves. they will not bend.
- Create a layer of lining of cement-bonded chipboard with better adhesion (used for laying tiles on the walls).
Combining these methods to solve problems with the “sticking” of mortars and the strength of the substrate, you can get a very high-quality result of the work. It is important to use all available options to improve the quality of the finish.
Among the necessary tools and materials should be noted:
- Primer, as well as for its application roller.
- Several trowels, among which are regular, toothed and rubber trowel for grouting.
- A construction level, and preferably a laser level.
- Adhesive mixture and grout, it is also recommended to purchase a sealant.
- A container for the glue.
- The tile.
If method 1 or 3 is chosen, you will additionally need lag, plywood, reinforcing mesh and fasteners for it.
Gluing tile on OSB
Today we will talk about gluing tile on OSB boards (they are OSB sheets, OSB panels and wood boards). Similarly, you can glue ceramic tiles on the OSB sheets.
The need to install tile on OSB boards most often arises in the construction of houses on frame technology. Frame house construction is gaining popularity, and wood constructions made of wood boards are valued for their low cost and environmental friendliness. This is especially true in the construction of country houses. And in the leaders among the building and finishing materials here are considered OSB boards. These boards are several layers of compressed wooden sawdust and chips, bound with different resins. As a finishing material, OSB is an excellent substitute for gypsum board, particleboard, wood-fiber board, plywood and decorative plastic. The superiority of the following:
- Aesthetic qualities. the appearance is similar to wood, that’s why OSB is used as a decorative element;
- multifunctionality. OSB is used for finishing walls, ceilings, floors, as an auxiliary building material, as structural elements in construction;
- Easy processing. boards can be easily sawn, drilled, painted and glued;
- high strength.
However, this board also has significant disadvantages: an increased deformation on the fracture, as well as changes in the value at high humidity. It is these properties of OSB that create certain difficulties when it is necessary to finish the surface with tile. The problem is that no glue can glue tiles to OSB cleanly. Often the glued tiles fall off after a few days, because the glue deforms the board. Therefore it is necessary to apply different techniques to strengthen the bonding abilities of surfaces.
Laying on the mesh
A good result will be if you glue the tiles on the OSB on the mesh reinforcement. For this purpose, on a prepared and primed base it is necessary to lay a metal mesh, which is attached by any of the available methods. from the use of self-tapping screws to conventional staples, hammered with a stapler.
Mesh for reinforcement should be with a mesh with a size of 5 to 10 mm. The mesh should evenly cover the boards without bloating or tearing. When joining the sheets of the mesh should overlap each other by several centimeters.
Is it possible to glue tiles with regular mixtures? Yes, but it is still better to use mixtures with increased elasticity and high adhesion to wooden surfaces.
Floor leveling by screed on OSB plywood
If you need to level the base from significant level differences, then the above described technology of laying tiles on a wooden floor will be the ideal solution. But to make the screed will have to live a layer of waterproofing. As it can be an ordinary polyethylene film with a thickness of at least 150 microns. To lay tiles on a wooden floor quality and under the screed base is not formed mold, the film should be laid with an overlap of at least 15 cm, followed by mandatory sealing of joints with a strong adhesive tape, as well as on the walls should make the same allowance. The thickness of the screed should be between 2.5 and 3.5 cm. Less and more is not recommended.
A thinner layer will be the weakest link in the structure, while a thicker layer will be cool enough.

Any bends, dips or hollows can cause the OSB to lie loose on the concrete surface, which in turn leads to the deflection of the chipboard and the gradual delamination of the tiled surface.
Pouring leveling screed
For minor defects in the concrete subfloor, you can do with “local measures” in the form of scraping bumps and potholes with a pick, or filling pits and cracks with putty.
However, in the case of significant horizontal slopes of the base such half-measures will not do.
To level the surface of the floors will need to produce concrete screed. For this purpose you can use ready-made dry mixes of sand-concrete, which can be purchased at any construction store. To prepare a dry mixture ready for use, it should be diluted with water in the proportions indicated on the package.
In order to obtain the highest quality mortar, when preparing it, you should strictly follow the instructions from the manufacturer.
You can also prepare the mortar for screeding floors with your own hands. To do this you will need a M-300 or M-400 cement, water, and coarse sand.
If the thickness of the concrete screed is expected to be more than 30 mm, instead of sand it is advisable to take a fine gravel.

The easiest way to make beacons from a metal profile

Laying of OSB-panels on a wooden base
Most often OSB-panels are used in low-rise frame building, where the main building material is wood. In this case, as a base, which makes the chipboard more rigid, you can use a wooden boardwalk.
It can be made as an ordinary wooden floor, on which the OSB-board is laid and fixed with self-tapping screws. To make the surface of the board even and not sagging in use, the boarding should be made as strong and smooth as possible.
If the OSB board acts as a rough floor, which is often the case in frame construction, you can make it stronger and stiffer with a thick sheet of gypsum board or cement-bonded chipboard.
These materials will not only give rigidity to the OSB, but also allow it to get a fairly strong bond with tile adhesive.
For laying on the floor it is necessary to use moisture-resistant varieties of plasterboard. If the owner decided to save money on floors and laid conventional gypsum board, at the first leak of water or heating pipes he would have to open up the floor and change the soaked sheets of gypsum board.
The third option for the preparation of the OSB base for tile laying is the fixing of a plaster mesh on the surface of the board. In this case, the tile adhesive will be held by the mesh, which will simultaneously perform a reinforcing role.
However, as practice shows, this method is more suitable for tiling walls than floors. On the floors, the tile under the weight of furniture and people gradually begins to depart from the rough OSB floors.
