How to correctly insert a needle into a sewing machine
How to correctly insert the needle into the sewing machine. this question is almost the most important in the work on the sewing machine. Indeed, how many times have I been approached by friends to look at their machine. why it does not sew? And, although I am not a mechanic, I have looked and found sometimes the only reason is that the needle is not inserted correctly! The machine, though not a rocket, is still a very fine tool, and everything in it is precisely adjusted, each gear, cam, groove has its purpose and stands in its place. That’s why it should not be neglected. It also applies to the needle.
Asking the question: “How to insert a needle into a sewing machine?”, people, of course, are interested specifically in their machine. Of course, who asks this question, faces this problem for the first time. Therefore, all questions: “How to insert a needle into a sewing machine Podolsk? How to insert a needle into a sewing machine Seagull? How to insert the needle into the sewing machine zinger? How to insert a needle into a manual sewing machine? How to insert a needle into an old sewing machine?”. the answer is the same: needles are inserted into any machine the same way.
BUT! There is one rule: you need to know which side to insert the needle into the sewing machine. When we were learning how to thread a sewing machine for the first time, I already paid attention to this question. But then we talked more about how to insert the thread into the needle, on which side. It is clear that with the one where the needle is located. And here we were talking about how to insert the needle? So, in this article, we will focus on this problem separately, and in the video lesson, we will visually review the entire process.
How to insert the needle into the Podolsk?
The needle in “Podolsk” type machines is inserted in the highest position of the needle bar, and the flat part of the thickened bulb must be turned to the right. In this case, the long groove is turned towards the base of the sleeve. The needle is inserted upwards until it stops and is manually clamped with the special screw.
How to insert a needle into a sewing machine “Chaika 132 m. The needle is inserted into the needle holder. When doing so, the needle bar must be in the up position. The needle is inserted upwards so that it enters the hole of the needle holder until it stops.
The structure of a needle
The fact that factories replace the needle by professionals, they do not need tips. But in home machines, since the bulb is ground to the flats, the position of the lug is adjusted to this displacement. So if you insert the needle the wrong way, not only can you not get looping, but the needle can get caught in the needle plate and break or damage the plate itself: the slightest burr on the plate and the fabric will appear tight.
Accordingly, if the needle is not flattened, the bulb is thicker and the location of the eye is also shifted. The needle in the hole of the needle plate should not touch its sides. position 5.
It is necessary to know, that a gap between a shuttle and a needle in a vertical plane is established in 0,05 mm. So, if the thickness of the bulb is slightly greater, in addition to the displacement of the needle relative to the hole in the needle plate, the spout of the hook can hit the needle. This will break the needle and hook nose inevitably.
But here’s the interesting thing, that in more than 30 years I have not learned this in practice. Maybe I am lucky, but all my machines work with needles from different manufacturers. In general, I learned about the different thickness of the flasks five minutes before you. But it is better to know about it!
Furthermore, needles from different manufacturers have different bulb thicknesses. The expert, the author of this great book, which can be downloaded from the Internet, by the way, recommends inserting only those needles that your machine is set to. That’s why they say in the instructions that “DO NOT use any other needles”! For example, it is written in my manual to the carver. If you want to change to a different needle, you have to change the machine. That’s why not everything can be repaired by the YouTube videos, and you should think very carefully before you unscrew and move anything. You can change the machine completely.
So we interfere in the process minimally: to replace the needle, we only need to know the structure of the machine needle. where its long groove is. The thicker part of the bulb has a cut side, this cut is called bald. If the machine is adjusted for Indian needles, you may miss stitches in the stitch if a domestic needle is inserted. And vice versa.
Remember ! On all sewing machines, install the needle so that the long groove on the needle faces the direction of the needle thread guide. this is the manufacturer’s hint. If the needle is flattened, the flattened needle will be on the opposite side.
Once the needle is inserted, manually rotate the handwheel and check the needle against the hole in the needle plate. If it’s ok, after that, tuck the machine in and check the quality of the stitching. If there are no gaps, then everything is fine, you can sew.
In the video tutorial, I said that there are craftsmen who grind a bald spot. But, first of all, it does the craftsman and he has such a needle sews. And secondly, craftsmen are not always right either, as you have already seen in my example: in the lesson on both of my working machines were inserted industrial needles, which I changed to ordinary household. Everything at me sews.
After writing an article, I could not calm down, until the second day in the morning I was not visited by the insight (eureka): needles must have bulbs of different diameters! Only the flask with a large diameter is flattened by a certain amount, and then the needle diameters are equalized on one side. I checked and. exactly! So I made another video about it. (while it’s not on the channel)
However, miracles still remained: I came across two needles with thick flasks without flats, which sewed as well as “normal” needles. So try, experiment and find your own answers to questions. Good luck.
Today we learned how to properly insert the needle into the sewing machine, what side to insert the needle into the sewing machine, the structure of the needle and what affects the quality of the stitching.

Step-by-step instructions for installing a machine needle
After doing all this, insert the thread into the needle and sew a few stitches. If the stitches are straight, then you have coped with the task perfectly and can safely create great outfits. If the stitches come out askew or if the thread breaks, try adjusting the needle position by turning it slightly the other way. Turn the needle and check its correct position time after time until the test stitches come out perfectly. And most importantly, remember that patience is the lot of the strong of spirit, and nerve cells do not regenerate!
Preparing to adjust the shuttle assembly, housing exhibition, changing the buffer spring
Adjust the hook block in the following sequence:
There are two clamps on the plate to align the hook block. During the adjustment check the gap between the heel of the hook. The pusher should be free, it is important not to squeeze the spring.
Adjusting the spring
Interesting! It is a common mistake to use pliers to secure the element.
When everything is done, it remains to replace the buffer spring. This can be done with the shuttle disconnected. The pressure ring is attached and the bobbin is released. Cap must be set aside and unscrew the foot. After that, you can remove the buffer on the spring to replace it.
Design of a machine needle
It looks like a metal rod with a cylindrical shape. The needle is usually made of stainless steel with a titanium or nickel coating. It is made in such a way that it does not bend or break.
The upper part is called the bulb. This is the thickest part of the needle. Along the middle and bottom is a long groove. The thread inside it does not feel any friction when the needle pierces the fabric. At the bottom is the point, and just above it is the eye of the needle. On the opposite side of the long groove is the short one. The thread running through it sags when the needle is lifted, the shuttle picks up the loop and forms a stitch. When the needle is in the last stage of lifting, it tightens the stitch. The fabric is then moved and the process described here is repeated again.

At the bottom is the point, and just above it is the eye of the needle. On the opposite side of the long chute is a short chute. The thread running through it, when the needle is lifted sags, the hook picks up the loop and forms a stitch. When the needle is in the last stage of lifting, it tightens the stitch. Then the cloth is moved and the process described here is repeated again.
The importance of the pedal
In electrically powered machines, the normal function of the device can be impaired by deficiencies in the operation of the drive. In the pedal is the speed regulator. if it is broken, it may behave abnormally, for example, tear from the spot even with light pressure.
You can fix the problem yourself: the graphite “pills” are pressed together through the spring by the pressure lever, the resistance decreases and the rotation speed increases. In this case it is enough to disassemble, clean and reassemble.
The sewing machine is noisy and slow
Under the needle plate thread clippings are piled
The drive belt is too tight When replacing the drive belt, you overtightened it. Adjust it so that when you press it with your finger, it will sag slightly but firmly.
