Pumps for vacuumization of split-systems
To remove more gaseous substances from assembled, but not yet filled with freon compressor-condensing unit, you need special device. pump-vacuum device. Air pumping procedure from split-system can be fulfilled by pumps of two main types. low-vacuum and high-vacuum.
Let’s repeat once again: vacuumization of air conditioner with your own hands is possible, but without vacuum pump this work can’t be done.
- Rotary plate (single-stage). Are characterized by low operating noise, possibility of adjustment of residual pressure, simplicity of design. Their disadvantages are the need for periodic replacement of consumables (e.g. oil);
- Two-circuit (two-stage). They are equipped with two main rotors that work in tandem. They are economical, effectively “pushing” air to the drain by increasing pressure in the circuit of the evacuated device;
- Water ring type. Able to evacuate air and liquid equally well. Their disadvantages are high power consumption and high water demand.
Of the types of vacuum pumps listed above, exclusively in the low-vacuum range (10 5.10 2 Pa) only water-ring devices work. Other types have a wider vacuuming range, up to 10.3 Pa, t.е. high vacuum degree.
- Diffusion. They are highly effective and provide rapid vacuumization. But for the refrigeration circuit, they can not be used, t.к. working fluid of these pumps is synthetic oil, which contaminates vacuuming circuit;
- Cryogenic. Their operation is accompanied by the injection of nitrogen which freezes and diverts gases and liquids while increasing the degree of vacuum in the inner atmosphere of the circuit;
- Ion-Getter. Equipped with a thin titanium film that traps molecules of gases and liquids removed from the refrigeration circuit during vacuuming. The most effective. removing up to 97% of impurities.
Despite the advantages of ion-jet vacuum pumps, the high vacuum levels (over 10 mbar) and the high vacuum stability of the ion-jet vacuum pumps are often negligible.5 Pa), at installation of split-systems they are used seldom. these devices are expensive.
Vacuumizing the air conditioner: it’s important!
We recommend that you always order the equipment and installation from one company, t. к. you always get a full guarantee and are secured against premature repair.
At installation of air conditioner the outdoor and indoor units of split-system are connected to each other with two copper pipes. These are special high copper alloy refrigeration tubes.
They are designed to allow the refrigerant to circulate in the refrigeration circuit of the air conditioner. Without going into the details of the refrigeration cycle, the process can be illustrated as follows. The compressor in the outdoor unit presses hot freon into the heat exchanger of the outdoor unit, where the high pressure condenses the refrigerant, giving heat to the outdoor air. To speed up this process, the heat exchanger of the outdoor unit (condenser) is blown by a fan. The fully condensed liquid freon then travels through a thin liquid pipe to the indoor unit. But on the way it passes through a special device: a thermostatic expansion valve (TEFV) or flow switch. The TRV is intended to regulate the refrigerant flow, which then enters the internal block and to reduce the freon pressure in liquid phase. Thus, the cooled Freon in liquid state flows through a thin copper pipe to the heat exchanger of the indoor unit of the air conditioner. It does not matter what type of internal unit we are talking about (wall, cassette, ducted or any other). the processes are exactly the same everywhere.

In the indoor unit, the liquid freon under low pressure begins to evaporate intensively, boiling. The heat exchanger of the indoor unit absorbs the heat. In order to make this process more efficient and to allow the cooled air to spread around the room, a fan blows on the heat exchanger. At the outlet of the indoor unit, the fully evaporated refrigerant enters the thick gas pipe in a gaseous state. Through a pipe, it flows back to the outdoor unit. to the compressor. Then the process repeats. This is how any refrigeration unit works in a very simplified form. Including domestic split system. By the way an ordinary refrigerator works the same way.

It is these two pipes. thick and thin, that are laid by split-system fitters during installation. There are high requirements for this work. In particular, the pipes should not get dust, sand or copper shavings. The places of rolled connections should provide a tight and completely airtight connection.
After all the pipes are laid, fastened and firmly connected to the taps of the outdoor unit and to the fittings of the indoor unit, at first sight, the system can be started. But there is no way. In the connecting pipes and in the tubes of the heat exchanger of the indoor unit at this stage there is air. In no case can not allow the refrigerant to mix with the air in the working system. It will lead to a significant change in the characteristics of the freon, which in turn will lead to abnormal operation of the system, including a decrease in the cooling capacity and freezing of some parts of the circuit.
Besides, even very small quantity of water vapors, dissolved in the air, got into a contour, very quickly dissolves in oil that lubricates a compressor. It leads to deterioration of lubricating properties and increased wear of the compressor. And compressor is the most responsible and expensive unit in a conditioner. Therefore it is necessary to remove all air from connecting pipes and heat exchanger of indoor unit before start-up of assembled split system.
For this purpose, a vacuum pump (vacuum gauge) is connected to the service port on one of the cocks of the outdoor unit through a special manometer manifold. This device during ten-twenty minutes (duration of air evacuation depends on capacity of the conditioner and extent of connecting pipes) evacuates air from the line creating deep vacuum in it.
The process is seen by the pressure gauges on the manifold. After the necessary vacuum is reached, the pump is turned off, and another fifteen to thirty minutes the installers observe whether the pressure in the system changes. A stationary arrow on the pressure gauge indicates complete tightness of the system and all connections made. If there is a vacuum drop, it means that there is air leakage somewhere. Then the installers have to find the leaky place and to fix the problem.
During vacuumization the installers, of course, do not have to wait nervously looking at the manometer needle. They have better things to do in the meantime. This is fixing the route from outside, fitting the box covers, power supply and other remaining stages of the air conditioner installation procedure. Only after specialists made sure that there is no air in the line and it is completely tight, they open taps of outdoor unit and start freon entering the system. Now you can safely make a test run of the system.
During test running a conditioner is switched on in all modes, and specialists are making sure that a capacity of split-system is corresponded to the announced characteristics.
Very often the procedure of evacuating (or vacuumization) of the trace is neglected and part of the refrigerant is blown through the system so that it expels all the air from the trace. Loss of insignificant part of freon does not negatively influence the following operation of air-conditioner, especially if the length of the route does not exceed five-seven meters. But the danger lies elsewhere. Nobody knows if all air is forced out of the line. And though at first sight with the sufficient blowing of the line there should not be anything left, the practice shows that in general later problems in the work appear in those installations where the vacuumization was neglected. The most inconvenient thing about this point is the ambiguity of symptoms. sometimes during the diagnostics of such unfortunate objects it is far from being immediately possible to find the cause of the unsatisfactory work of the system. And to correct the situation you have to evacuate freon from the system completely and fill up a conditioner with a new refrigerant by scales. This procedure takes much time and costs much, especially if the system is designed for R-410 freon (most of modern conditioners).
Among other things, the vacuumization of the system and the subsequent pressurization under vacuum makes it possible to verify reliably the complete tightness of the system. This practically completely eliminates the possibility of freon leakage during the first days after installation. By the way the leakage in the first hours or days of work of the system is a sign of low-quality installation, in particular rolled connections of the pipeline. Our company obligatorily performs. system vacuumization. Vacuum evacuation of air conditioners is performed by two-stage vacuum pumps. Vacuuming process lasts minimum 30 minutes in small split systems. If the freon tracks are very large and expensive equipment such as VRV, RMX or a multi-split is installed, we additionally pressurize the system under nitrogen.
it is desirable to make one more important notice. Freon leakage is very dangerous for the compressor. The matter is that during work the electric motor of compressor is cooled by a stream of the refrigerant. If conditioner does not cool well, the first thing that a user usually does is to set even more low temperature on the remote control and to try to switch on and off the conditioner. Such attempts are very likely to burn out the compressor, leading to costly repairs. But even if the compressor is not burnt out, sometimes the looseness in a line leads to a situation when on the side of low pressure there is an air leak in a system. And these are already described problems with moisture. If not evacuated and refilled with fresh freon afterwards, the system will be unstable and most likely will fail anyway.
That is why the service center of the company “Japan Service” carefully monitors compliance with the rules of installation by our fitters and give a guarantee on all our installation work. Also we advise our customers that if there are any symptoms of abnormal operation of air conditioner, strange blinking of LEDs or appearance of error codes on the remote control, the user should immediately turn off the air conditioner and contact a specialist of service center (044) 502-81-42 Vitaly.
In case of the compressor breakage there is an expertise that shows the exact reason of its failure. Or it is a defect, or air conditioner’s work in conditions of inadmissible low ambient temperatures, or frequent attempts to start air conditioner which lost a considerable part or all the refrigerant. All modern air conditioners know how to signal critically low pressure. But, unfortunately, not all of them are able to switch off by themselves. That is why user should realize his responsibility during the experiments. Even if freon is not working due to the fault of our installers, many attempts to run not working air conditioner will lead to the non-warranty breakage. And expensive repair will be at the expense of the owner.
That is why it is very important not only to choose a responsible company-installer, but also subsequently to observe elementary rules of air conditioner use, described in the instruction manual, which is obligatory given to the customer together with other documents when the facility is handed over.
We only install equipment purchased in our stores. We recommend you always order the equipment and its installation from one company, only in this case you always get a full guarantee and are insured against premature repairs.
Equipment for vacuuming
In order to perform air conditioner charging and vacuuming when installing or maintaining it, you will need a set of the following equipment :
- vacuum pump;
- manifold equipped with a manometer to control the internal pressure;
- A device to search for leaks is necessary for thorough sealing;
- wrench for valve;
- hose set;
- Valves for hoses and manometer;
- an electric heater;
- apparatus for collecting the refrigerant;
- charging station.
Basic type of equipment for vacuumization of split systems is vacuum pump. It creates reduced pressure inside the air conditioner’s circulation circuit. Residual air is evacuated due to the vacuum. At lowering the pressure the boiling point of water decreases. In this process, the moisture present in the circuit is transformed into steam and removed along with the air.
Depending on the degree of pressure reduction, pumps can be high-vacuum (0.02 mbar) and low-vacuum (0.1 mbar). For pressurization and evacuation, the model is selected according to its capacity, output rate and residual pressure limit in accordance with the performances of the serviced air conditioner.
Vacuuming of the system
Though you install conditioner by yourself, but you still need the vacuum pump. It is connected to charging port and turned on for 15-30 minutes.
Within a quarter of an hour, observe the hand of the manometer, which should not “creep” back to the zero mark. If the arrow is stationary you can move on to the next step, if not, the tightness of the connections has not been achieved. In this case before installing air conditioner with your own hands you have to find and fix the leak.
Assembly of the units
If you want to do everything properly, the installation of air conditioner with your own hands should be started from the careful study of the instructions. For the most part they are similar, but allowances, cable cross section requirements, length of run, etc.д. may vary. Another advantage of reading the manual you will know exactly in what order to perform the work. In general, here is what should be done:
- We mark on the wall the supposed places of installation of a unit, a route etc.д. We take a device for detecting wiring and go through the whole route. If you do not have such a device, you can take the phone, turn it on the radio mode, tune it so that when you approach the wires it starts making noise. In this way it is also possible to locate the wires, but only under voltage.
- Fixing the assembly plate of the indoor unit. It will have to be placed horizontally, so you will need a spirit level (a bubble level is better, but a laser one). We put the plate, we align it according to the level, we mark metal for fasteners. We take away the plate, drill a hole and install the fasteners (in concrete and brick houses we use plugs, in wooden houses we can use self-tapping screws).
The mounting plate of the indoor unit and the box for routing are fixed
It is not convenient to hang the outside unit even under the window by yourself installing split system
At this stage the first step of independent installation of air conditioner is finished. Next, we will lay the trace.
About the need of vacuumization of the line
Oct 2021 Once the outdoor and indoor units are signalled, the air conditioner circuit is connected to both units (connection method. Rolling in most cases). In the line there is atmospheric air, which is foreign by its composition to the freon-oil mixture of the air conditioner. over, moisture can oxidize oil, which is added to freon and is urged to lubricate friction details of the air conditioner’s compressor, which rotor has considerable revolutions, and in case of deterioration of lubrication it can simply fail. Breakage of the heart of air conditioner. compressor. is a major failure of air conditioner (often at such malfunctions it is easier to change the whole outside unit, t.к. and the compressor itself is quite expensive, and the work of replacing it will cost a lot). Or moisture can condense and freeze in the narrowest and thinnest place of the freon circuit. “capillary.”. The result of a clogged capillary tube. 100% failure of the unit (at least. Automatic shutdown). That is why the line must be vacuumed.
over, in the process of installation (laying two copper pipes freon. gas pipe and a liquid pipe of different diameter) inside can get particles of dust, swarf, etc.д. So, the pipes are connected to the fittings of the indoor unit, the taps of the outdoor unit. But it is too early to start freon. The team must connect the vacuum pump to a special connector (tap) and perform evacuation. evacuate the atmospheric air from the circuit. the accumulator evacuates air from the laid track within 10-20 minutes. In terms of time, this procedure can be more or less. much depends on capacity of an air conditioner (at powerful blocks big diameter pipes are used, and consequently there is more air in them), and also on the length of a laid line (the line can be both 3, and 33 meters). If there were soldering of the air conditioner’s line in the process of installation. the more so the process of vacuumization should last longer.
After the necessary pressure value is reached the vacuum unit is switched off and the foreman observes some (10-25) minutes the change of pressure in the trace. If the quality of freon pipe connections is good and there are no defects in the pipe itself, the pressure should not rise. It means that installation is correct and conditioner, like a fridge, will work for years (if there is no internal factory defect of the model).
After evacuating, the block is put out on operating modes in order to check compliance of technical characteristics to the ones, claimed by the producer. It is not always possible to test in all modes, but these are exceptions: for example, when installing split-system in winter, the split-system will not always work (especially non-inverter models, which work with the outside temperature up to 5 degrees).
Wherever you ordered the installation, remember that the so-called “purging” of the route. is an attempt to speed up the installation, contrary to technology. It is necessary to vacuumize the line.
