Saeco Carob Coffee Maker. I’ve had it for 8 years
This article is written as an answer to one of many questions on maintenance, service and repair of Saeco coffee roasters. I myself use a Saeco Magic Cappuccino, which I got for half price because the body was broken during shipping. It’s been working flawlessly for 8 years and I’m not going to change it. It travels with me to the country house and on business trips, and even a couple of times I took it on trips and used it in hotels to make coffee on the road.
To keep the strainer from clogging, after each brew I put the cone in the coffee maker and pour water through the empty cone. Now I looked, of all the holes, 2 dozen at most are clogged. Coffee is brewed initially with a small amount of fine particles, but with very little. Т.е., If the coffee sits still, there’s a little bit of sediment. I use a fairly coarse grind of coffee beans, recommended for espresso.
And the question in the studio came to us from Arkhangelsk and sounded as follows: If you could just take a minute. I have a Saeco Armonia, I bought it 5-6 years ago. A couple of months ago she had clogged holes in the strainer, almost impossible to see through. How to clean it I thought for a long time, then I boiled it in a descaler. As a result, they opened, but the coffee began to brew with the solids, almost “Turkish-style”. Where can I buy a strainer?? The second question is whether and where to take the machine itself for cleaning, to a Philips Service Center?
I don’t think the treatment of the strainer has affected the size of the holes. Maybe your grinder is too fine. And earlier, because of the clogged holes, the fine coffee particles came in much smaller quantities. I’m inclined to blame it on the fine grind. Maybe that’s why the strainer is clogged. If you grind it coarsely enough the sieve shouldn’t get clogged. I hope you did not mix up the descaler with concentrated sulfuric acid. And an ordinary descaler should not, and can not affect the size of holes in the steel strainer.
If you think that, as they say, the strainer is worn out, you can buy it at any specialty coffee shop that sells Saeco coffee machines or at a service that specializes in repairing the strainer. I don’t know if they have them in Arkhangelsk. You can buy a strainer at Proxima, which used to be Saeco’s exclusive supplier in Russia. Do Philips service centers have strainers? I doubt they bother with it. But it is worth asking, it does not take money for the demand, and the service center for repair of small appliances in Arkhangelsk is certainly.
It’s easier to clean a coffee maker like this yourself than to give it to someone who will do the same thing as you. You need a regular descaling once every six months. I do it with citric acid, concentration: a tablespoon per glass of water. If the circuit is dirty you will immediately notice the yellow color of the flushing fluid and a fine sediment of the scale. Then you have to descale more often. And the water must be filtered and settled. The water is different in different areas, somewhere a lot of iron, calcium-magnesium compounds. I spill the same acid from coffee oils on the horn. But in general, I try to keep the horn clean all the time. Every time after making coffee, I take the strainer out of the cone and rinse and wipe off the grease deposit on the membrane under warm water, then put the strainer back in the cone and the cone in the coffee maker and pour milliliters of 50 hot water under pressure. The back of the strainer also regularly gets coffee grounds. It can be removed with a sponge and soap. Also with a sponge you can wash the filter itself under the strainer.
The cone must not be excessively tightened, t.к. The cone ears wear down the guides on the cone seating. The cone itself also suffers. Eventually the horn starts to dangle and it is impossible to tighten it. Repair, t.е. It costs a pretty penny to replace the cone and heating element that comes with the cone holder, it’s cheaper and faster to buy a new coffee maker. That’s something I’ve also encountered in my work.
If you think there are too many coffee solids in the cup, pay attention to the grind of the coffee you are using. Possibly too fine grind. Before concluding that the strainer is not suitable I would recommend to try the espresso coffee first, it is visually quite coarse and you cannot confuse it with the coffee mill for the distiller.

Coffee machine and limescale
To clean the machine from scale, you need to disassemble the hydraulic system (boiler, pipes) put all parts in a solution of a special agent with a soft (!) acid, clean the parts mechanically, then wash everything with water and reassemble.
If you clean the machine without disassembling it, but simply by running the acid through the system, there is a high probability of lime clogging.
In addition, together with the scale will be dissolved and the surface layer of iron parts, which can eventually lead to the release of heavy metals.
Therefore, once again, to properly decalcify the coffee maker, it must be dismantled.
To significantly increase the time between decalcification procedures, you should use water filters or filtered water.
Our experience indicates: A filtered coffee machine requires a complete descaling approximately once every 10 (!) years.
If the coffee machine is directly connected to the water supply, a special filter must be installed. Replace the cartridge once a year.
If the machine is equipped with an aqua tank, filtered water or a water softener must be used.
With soft water and medium intensity of use, the decalcification is carried out once every 3-5 years.
Daily and regular cleaning
Every 2 days, clean the cooking group using a blind filter. The hob can be cleaned using only water and no chemicals.
Every 2 weeks remove and clean the shower screen of the hob with a special agent for removing coffee oils, such as Clean Express. Also clean the group’s gasket.
Clean the brew group once a month using a blind filter and a special detergent.
Once every 6 months, lubricate the mechanism of the group (E61 and its variants) with food-grade silicone.
Also, it is very helpful to read and follow the advice of the coffee machine manufacturer. Closely read the annotations to the technique is essentially useful.
Caring for the carob coffee maker. Decalcification Cleaning (decalcification) 20.
Another important step in caring for coffee makers is to clean the boiler from scale or decalcification. If your water is soft or medium-hard, then the machine needs to be cleaned 2-3 times a year, if the water is too hard, then more often. Decalcification is better to use special agents, I previously used the chemistry from Saeco, but soon it is actually not on sale:
Algorithm of usage
First of all, pay attention to the quality of the water you use to make your coffee.
Always use filtered water to prevent the formation of limescale on the elements of the coffee maker, as well as to reduce the taste of the drink.
Using the coffee carob is not as complicated as it seems at first glance. To make coffee, you need to use the following step-by-step instructions:
- Prepare the coffee grounds. If you are using coffee beans, you should grind in advance. Of course, many machines have a built-in grinder, but it rarely grinds the raw material to the right condition, so you’ll have to do everything yourself.
- Place the coffee into the coffee beaker. Squeeze the raw milk thoroughly to form a tight “pill. Make sure coffee dust does not get into the threads of the machine.
- Insert the coffee beaker into the machine to create a beaker.
- Turn the coffee maker on and wait until the beverage is brewed.
If your coffee maker is equipped with a cappuccinator (a special device that allows you to get a thick, milky crema), then after the espresso is ready, do the following
- Pour the milk into the pitcher (a special container).
- Dip the spout of the cappuccinator into the milk and whisk until you get a thick froth.
- Pour milk into the finished espresso and put the crema on top.
Keep in mind that ground coffee in the pod is only good for a single use. So after you make coffee, you should immediately throw away the tablet and rinse the container under running water.
Caring for your coffee machine and coffee maker
All coffee machines need timely maintenance and cleaning of internal systems when in use. It’s much easier and more correct to carry out these constant, but uncomplicated tasks yourself, rather than fixing breakdowns and paying for repairs at the service center.
There are several types of cleaners for the hydraulic system of coffee machines.
- Products for removing coffee fats and deposits.
- Cleaning agent for the cappuccinator.
- Cleaning Agent for Coffee Grinders.
How To Make A Carob Cake Without Sugar
Caring for a Carob Coffee Maker.
Most coffee carob makers do not have an integrated cleaning system. So for a long life of the coffee maker, you will have to take care of its cleanliness yourself. If using a coffee horn, rinse the horn under running water after you have finished brewing coffee, do not leave the coffee in the horn. Once a month it is desirable to put a cleaning tablet from coffee fats in an empty coffee horn, set in working position, switch on brewing a cup of coffee, but only to soak the tablet, and as soon as water starts pouring from the coffee nozzles stop the water supply. Preferably, this cleaning process should be completed within 10 to 15 minutes and after the powder has dissolved, rinse the cone and flush one to two liters of water through the cone. For decalcification. in the half-filled water tank, add the agent according to the dosage indicated on the packaging of the product, dissolve it completely, if it is a powder, and run the entire solution in small doses over a period of 30 minutes. After that rinse with two, three liters of clean water.
For cleaning it is often enough to rinse with clean water, but if the milk is already stuck to the walls of the cappuccinator, then to get rid of such deposits you can use a special cleaner for the cappuccinator. To begin with, you need to dilute the product to the right concentration, usually the proportions are written on the packaging, then pour the product into a container, immerse the cappuccinator in the product for a couple of minutes so that the deposits have melted, then turn on and off the steam for 5 minutes to remove them.10 minutes. After the milk deposits have been washed off, rinse the cappuccinator in the same way in fresh water. You can also remove the cappuccinator and rinse it under running water.
To wash the automatic cappuccinator you need to dilute and pour the cappuccino maker into the milk spout and press the hot milk button to pump out the cappuccino maker in small portions. After the cleaning process, rinse it with clean water in the same way.
How to care for your coffee machine.
In those coffee machines where the brewing unit is serviceable, it should be periodically taken out and cleaned under running water, and preferably with a brush or brush, this is most convenient when you release the waste coffee container, the unit can be taken out and rinsed immediately. Some machines need to clean the unit more often, some less often, you can clean the unit once when you clean the hopper or after 4. A clean unit will last longer and many breakdowns can be avoided. Where the brewing unit is unattended, it is sufficient to remove coffee deposits and descaling on a regular basis.
Almost all automatic coffee machines have a built-in cleaning system. Most coffee machines only inform you when they have brewed a certain number of cups, usually 220.300 pcs. And some machines block the brewing function completely, and until you clean it, it won’t brew coffee.
It is advisable to clean the filter from coffee deposits regularly and not to ignore the alarm, because deposits form in the brewing unit valve, coffee tubes and dispenser, which obstruct the coffee path and may also give a faint taste to the beverage. Decalcification should be carried out primarily according to the type of water you use, as well as the hardness of the water can be set in the menu of the coffee machine. The coffee machine must be operated with pure drinking water, not artesian water or mineral water. If you use tap water, be sure to filter it. It is better to use home-built in-line filters, they are much more efficient than those built into the water tank of the coffee machine.
If your coffee machine is equipped with a water filter, change the filter at least every 3 months. And during the decalcification process, the water filter must always be removed, otherwise if water with decalcification agent diluted in it passes through it, the filter can be thrown away. If the coffee machine is filled with pure filtered water, it is better to remove the built-in filter and not use it, because there is no reason to re-filter clean filtered water.
If you use flavored coffee or fatty coffee, it is not unreasonable to clean the grinder of coffee deposits. The best method is manual cleaning, but it requires disassembling the whole coffee machine, which takes a lot of time and money. For regular cleaning of the grinder, there are special products that can be used once a month, or twice a month as a preventive measure, depending on the coffee. To clean, you need to empty the coffee compartment, then pour the cleaner directly into the grinder, pour coffee on top, brew and pour 7-10 servings of coffee, and then you can drink it again. Naturally there is no need to rinse the grinder after cleaning with the filter, you will only kill it.
With proper care, the coffee machine and coffee maker will last much longer, because a large number of malfunctions are due to the fact that due to deposits of coffee or calcium, something jams, clogs and fails.

Decalcification of a coffee machine or descaling is the main kind of cleaning that 100% of coffee machines need
Yes, limescale is the most common reason to repair a coffee machine
Regular wiping of surfaces, rinsing of the brewing unit and automatic flushing of channels, which any coffee machine does by itself when it is turned on and off, is not what I (and all users) usually mean by cleaning of coffee machines. But I would like to take this opportunity to say that if wiping the outside of the machine is unlikely to prolong its life, but only emphasize its attractive appearance, then you should not neglect washing the brewing unit.
So still, how to properly clean your coffee machine?
“Enough of theories, we already know that, smart guy, let’s be specific”. I can already hear similar non-verbal messages.
And the answer is very simple: According to the instructions! Yes, if you have not looked in it yet. run read. Each, I repeat, each manual has a step-by-step description of this, as a rule, simple procedure. And there is no universal recipe for specific pushes and actions for all devices. You need to know what key to press, and what where and when to pour.
It happens that in 15-20 minutes, which are required for cleaning, you have to perform 10 different actions. And if you get it wrong, you often have to start the process all over again. But do not be afraid. Everything there is simple, you only need to follow the instructions, any “child” aged 14 years old will be able to cope with it.
The “sophisticated” machines (roughly speaking, with a price of 50-60 thousand euros or more) have a lot of features that you don’t really need but this is not a pattern) the purification procedure may require two steps. “Loading” the cleaner and running a fully automatic program at the touch of a button. But then again, which button to press, I recommend that you look in the manual.
To clean your coffee machine, you need to study the manual of your machine. As cliché as it sounds.
What to do if there’s no manual?
It’s lost, thrown away, you’re even assigned to a service machine in the office and have no idea how it came to be in your “environment”. There are few options here. Figuring out what to do by yourself is dangerous. The recommendation is this:
- Search on my site (in the upper right corner) to find a review of your model. Under all the reviews at the bottom, in the technical specifications, there is a link to the manual.
- If I do not have a review of your model, then open Yandex or Google.
- Type in the search “manual.
- On the first page of the output there will be a link to download the instructions or to view them directly in the browser window. open the document and look at the table of contents to find the desired section, something like “coffee machine cleaning” or “cleaning and care“.
There is also an option to call a specially trained person who, if the machine is rare, will do the above steps on his tablet or smartphone, standing next to the machine. Cheers. For the money. If your car is common, it will remember the sequence “from the head”. But it’s not free either.
What else you need to clean your coffee machine?
In addition to the instructions, you’ll need a cleaner anyway, no matter how you look at it. In essence, this is a descaler, nothing more. It almost always has to be used first, by pouring it into the clean water tank. Together with this clean water, in a certain proportion. This is usually the first or one of the first steps. How to Determine the Proportion? The answer will be unequivocally stated on the packaging of this cleaner. There is no single formula for all products.
“And what kind of coffee machine cleaner to use, I’ve heard something about coffee machine tablets”
An example of Topperr 3006 limescale remover
In any manual, which by this time you have probably already found and even timidly opened, will be written something along the lines of: “To clean your coffee machine, you can only use the !”. For example, its “branded” products for coffee machines produce Philips Saeco (about 800-1000, if no discounts: in Yandex.Market), DeLonghi (1000-1500 p. If without discounts, but for four uses: in the official store, in Yandex.Market), Bosch (in Yandex.Market), and almost all other well-known manufacturers: Jura (in Yandex.Market), Melitta (one of the most affordable “original,” in Yandex.Market), Krups (in Yandex.Market), etc.д.
Yes, the price may be surprising. It incorporates the margin of the coffee machine manufacturer, although the product itself is actually made by an OEM contractor, which has no relation to any particular coffee machine manufacturer. None of the above companies do not make their own cleaning products. Accordingly, you can safely use for any coffee machine means any other brand, from branded, as a rule, the cheapest Bosch and Melitta.
And you can actually use any “automatic coffee machine cleaner”, something like Cafedem, Top House, Urnex or Topperr, etc.п. They all have about the same effectiveness. Just follow the proportions written on the bottle. Most likely have some at your local home improvement store, may also be at the hardware store.
Ah yes, as for the decalcification tablets. This is “same eggs, seen from the side”. Just the active ingredients are compressed into a tablet, that’s all the difference. Tablets for the coffee machine are about the same effective as liquid products. But the price per clean can be lower (and maybe not). Yes, you can use them safely. But! Do not forget to make sure that the tablet BEFORE starting the process is FULLY dissolved in the water tank. In clean water, of course. Fill the tank to the MAX level.
“Why overpay, you can also use citric acid”!”
“Or vinegar, and here’s a great way. coca-cola, she even cleaned carburetors from cinders!”. such advisors you have not listened to yet? And there are a lot of them.
In short, you shouldn’t. Vinegar and cola to clean in general can not. With citric acid, under certain assumptions, you can. The recipe in this case is as follows: dilute the acid at the rate of 10 grams per liter of water, pour it into the tank for clean water and then. according to the program.
What is “proper espresso”??
Regardless of the method of preparation, and espresso is not an exception, coffee is considered optimally prepared when 18 to 22% of substances have been extracted from the beans.
Extraction is the extraction of a substance from a solution or dry mixture (in our case, ground coffee) using a solvent (in our case, hot water).
If the percentage of substances is lower, the coffee will be under-extracted. sour, viscous, brackish, grassy, with a short aftertaste. If the percentage of substances extracted from beans is higher, then the coffee will be over-extracted. tablet bitter, “dry”, empty, rough with a long unpleasant aftertaste, it wants to drink.
A proper, optimal, balanced espresso has an extraction rate of 18-22% and achieves a balance of sweetness, sourness, mild bitterness, sweetness and a lingering, delicious aftertaste.
For whom carob coffee makers are suitable
Before a more detailed description, I’ll put at the beginning of the main idea, which the reader should penetrate:
A normal carob coffee maker narrowly specializes in espresso and espresso-based drinks. That’s why they are also called espresso machines
That is, if you are well aware that you prefer Turkish coffee (from a turkey or electric turkey), from a geyser or, for example, filtered coffee (as an option, “alternative” brewing), then you do not need in principle a coffee carob. Trying to make something approximating to the aforementioned “cone” usually reminds me of nosebleed dentistry.
On the other hand, for espresso and espresso drinks the carob is a necessary and sufficient appliance. Here I’m leaving out the brackets of coffee machines, because grain machines and competent capsule machines are actually trying to approximate the process to brewing in a classic cone.
How to remove the housing, tray and container?
Regularly wipe the body of the machine with a lightly moistened sponge, then with a dry, soft cloth. this will ensure that there is no dust or dirty residue on your machine.

It is very important to regularly drain accumulated water in the tray, otherwise there will be an unpleasant smell or mold in the appliance.
You can also put the tray in the dishwasher and clean it that way (the temperature of the treatment must not exceed 60 ⁰C). Do not reinsert the drip tray until it has dried out beforehand.
