All about infrared gas burners
Infrared gas burner is in great demand in the process of heating garages, industrial premises and other similar objects. The popularity of the device is dictated by its high efficiency, which makes the application financially profitable. It should be noted that initially such units were designed to be used in private homes, where there is no centralized heating system. However, later they were used in other buildings, as it was extremely profitable.
All about infrared gas burners
At the heart of the design of the heating system is a radiant block, which is equipped with a ceramic plate with holes. In operation the plate can be heated up to 900 ° C, becoming a powerful source of thermal energy.
In addition to the plate in the design of the system includes:
- A special unit that controls the gas electric valve, controls the operation of electrodes and ionized flame sensor;
- Reflector made of polished stainless steel, which directs the flow of radiant heat directly into the heated area.
The ceiling gas infrared heaters for industrial applications are designed to heat strictly defined areas of the room, resulting in significant savings in thermal energy.
Advantages and disadvantages
Gas ceramic burner infrared radiation has certain advantages. Many people have already managed to assess all the advantages of using such equipment.
Its main positive points include:
- Quick action and ease of the process of heating the room. Even if the room is very cold, it can turn into a habitable room in a short time. It usually takes no more than 20 minutes to raise the temperature by 15 degrees;
- when heating with infrared devices in the facility does not cause air circulation, which may be accompanied by the manifestation of dust. This is especially important for people who are prone to allergic reactions;
- After heating the equipment does not leave behind a smell of burnt dust. The appliances do not increase the temperature of the air, but rather increase the heat in the room itself.
This equipment has a number of advantages, for example, it does not leave behind dirt
When gas combustion takes place, it reduces the amount of oxygen in the surrounding air. Another disadvantage: there is a process of contamination of the room with combustion products. This has a negative effect on the surrounding atmosphere.
Another negative point: it is forbidden by sanitary regulations for a person to be in the vicinity of source emitting infrared rays. It is necessary to take a competent approach to the task of heating the room with an infrared gas burner, because such devices have excessive power, which is not at all suitable for use in residential areas.
How the device works
Gas ceramic infrared heater works on the following principle:
- In the mixing chamber, the gas and air mix.
- An air-gas mixture burns through holes in the ceramic plates and acts as a heater for the plates.
- Ceramic plates heated to 900°C emit infrared heat.
The noteworthy feature of infrared radiation is the heating of objects that happen to be in the heated area. And heated objects then warm the environment with their heat (for more information, see the article on the principle of operation of the heater with infrared radiation). This amazing property of infrared rays saves energy. Saving up to 80% in some cases.
Built-in safety system sensors will turn the device off if conditions are contraindicated for operation. Therefore, it can be safely used in residential areas.
Building a heater from a pipe
This makeshift design is also called a heat-gas gun. It generates significantly more heat than previous heaters, and absorbs more energy resource. Also, such structures are often equipped with a chimney, which makes them bulky and difficult to carry.
To self-assemble the heater, you need to assemble the following material:
KOMPAC MK-1602A Industrial Infrared Gas Burner 6.3kW l PP Systems
- Three meter pipes of different diameters (two of 8 cm and one of 18 cm);
- steel plates, with which the fastening will be carried out;
- sheet metal;
- gas burner with a piezo igniter;
- axial ventilator.
You will also need a variety of tools: drill, welder, tape measure, level, angle grinder, metal scissors. The pipes can be replaced by cylinders or fire extinguishers of suitable diameters. An angle grinder will be needed to cut the bottom and top as well as to shorten the workpieces.
Two holes of different diameters are drilled into the pipe of 18 cm in diameter: 1 cm and 8 cm. Drill them opposite each other.
From the pipe with a diameter of 8 cm cut off a piece of 30 cm, which will be the combustion chamber. Fasteners are welded to this pipe and a 1 cm diameter hole is drilled in it. Then this pipe is inserted into the first pipe.
You must cut the end piece out of a sheet of metal. It will close the gap between the heater body and the combustion chamber. A combustion chamber is welded to the body, and to the 8 cm diameter hole a pipe for hot air outlet. After that a plug is welded on. After making sure that the gas burner is tightly attached to the combustion chamber, you can slip the hose through the centimeter holes.
At the back of the device there must be a fan and on the top of it a smoke evacuator. For the heater to stand firmly on the surface it is necessary to weld the feet. Gas heat gun heater efficiently heats rooms, economically consumes gas. However, safety precautions should be followed when using it.
How to choose the right one for heating your home
Suitable type of gas heater depends on the room, frequency of use and availability of gas.
As with traditional heating systems, you must first determine the thermal capacity of the device.
For typical homes in the middle zone is roughly estimated as 1 kW per 10 m 2 area.
A catalytic heater is well suited for small rooms (up to 2025 m2 ) because of its limited power (up to 2.9 kW) and economical use.
If your room is larger, then the appropriate choice would be an infrared device, t. к. Its power is higher, up to 5 kW and can heat the room up to 50 m 2. Given the relative localization of this heater, it may be better to buy several such devices, placing them in different parts of the room, to ensure even heating.
Give preference to infrared heaters (catalytic and ceramic) is worth it only if you do not use heating constantly (for example, come to the cottage for the weekend).
Attention! Because of the open combustion chamber and the interaction with the ambient air, it is not recommended to use these devices in unventilated rooms of less than 15 m 2.
Otherwise, for permanent heating, you should use a gas convector. This device will allow you to heat large rooms evenly without affecting air quality.
If a temporary heating is needed (for example, while the oven is heating up), portable heaters using liquid fuel are suitable. In addition, pay attention to what gas the selected device works.
With permanent heating, you should give preference to natural gas from the network, in order to save yourself from refueling the cylinders.
Only infrared heaters with ceramic heat panel are suitable for the street. They are often available as heat umbrellas or pyramids, for vertical installation.
Portable mini-heaters of the infrared type can be used in garages and outbuildings, as well as for camping and picnics.
When buying a portable heater, ask about the presence of protections (against overturning, gas leakage, excessive CO2), especially if there are small children or animals in the house. Such systems will make the operation of the device absolutely safe.
Infrared heater with their own hands: classification, features and principles of operation
First of all, let’s determine who may need to make an infrared heater with their own hands.
For example, for people who have difficulties with heating (accidents in heating centers and insufficient heating of batteries are frequent phenomena).
Another category. tourists, fishermen, hunters. People who are in the air for a long time. Such heaters, of course, can be bought, but sometimes they are heavy, take up much space, and are not cheap. Let’s try to make our own infrared heater.
The main problem is that you can not carry much with you on a fishing trip. And if there is no question even with rods, tackle and bait, you should take everything, but with heater you have to look for lightweight alternative. For obvious reasons will not fit and diesel generator on a fishing socket in 220 V is not observed.
The best option is to use liquefied gas. On sale you can find 2 basic types of cylinders threaded and collet.
Threaded cylinder resembles a medium-sized fire extinguisher, where the top is a thread for screwing on the bait. Such cylinders are very expensive and heavy. And we remember that on fishing, the less extra weight, the better.
Collet can be similar in weight and shape to a large can of hairspray or dichlorvos (whichever is closer). One cylinder lasts for 3.5-4 hours, so take as many of them as you plan to spend outdoors.
How to make a sturdy model on the basis of a collet cylinder
In order to use the cylinder, you will need a special burner, which consists of the following elements:
Such a burner is designed for cooking and heating food, but it is not designed for heating at all. Despite the fact that its power is 1 kW, even the hands to warm is problematic. The heat instantly comes off upwards.
In order to correct such a drawback, you need to redistribute the heat and direct it to the heat dissipating surface.
The main part of the infrared heater is a heated body, which gives off heat due to the presence of heat dissipating surface. As such can be used:
We will make a mesh construction on the basis of an ordinary tea strainer.
You can use a prefabricated structure in the form of a heat dissipator, but
- a small piece of galvanizer;
- A piece of mesh with fine mesh;
- 2-3 clamps;
- busbar made of copper 2-3 cm;
- metal drills.
Construction and step by step assembly instructions
If we take the industrial model as a guide, it is a cylinder 100 mm high, 50 mm in diameter, where all the walls and the lid are made of metal mesh. A hole is cut out on the bottom for the flame inlet.
In order to replicate the construction as closely as possible, we need the most common tea strainer.
Next, use the template to cut out the fasteners to the burner from galvanized steel.
When cutting out the template, make at least a minimum of 1-2 mm margin!
You should end up with the following parts.
This is how you attach the adapter to the collet.
This is what a homemade nozzle with an adapter looks like.
This is not the best way to reconstruct a collet cylinder, as it still does not provide enough heat in the end. Even if you put the burner with a diffuser in a small tent, only near it you can get warm at least a little.
To improve the construction and make it a really effective heat source, you can use fine mesh metal netting.
You cut out the necessary size piece from the galvanized sheet.
You put a strainer on the grid and cut a piece big enough to the edges of the grid.
Use metal scissors for cutting, it will be much faster and more accurate.
Drill small holes in the top to provide normal draught.
Bend the flaps on the sides and put it on the grid.
Be sure to secure with rivets to prevent the net from falling from the base of the cylinder. During burning it heats up to a crisp, so there is a very great risk of injury.
Now it really is an infrared heater, with enough heat for the tent even in very cold weather.
And if you have to bring your hands close to a normal burner, the improved model gives good heat up to 50 cm from the source.
Why does the gas bottle freeze
When going out on the ice, and in a campaign in the winter, many are faced with another problem freezes gas in the cylinder. And if already at minus 10 the collet ceases to work, the threaded one at minus 15 though it lights up, but it siphons very much. How to fix this problem? Make a passive cylinder heater that takes the heat from the burner itself and transfers it to the cylinder. You will need a copper bar, which you screw to the cylinder in this way
Literally 20-30 minutes is enough. After which the structure works in the normal mode.
Varieties of infrared heaters
In the 21st century hot water outages are still relevant. Many people, installing heating, focus on autonomous systems that will continue to work without connecting to the central heating system.
- Boilers of different types with a connected water loop;
- Air heating by ventilation system;
- IR heaters, which are controlled automatically by thermostats.
The latter option is the safest and in terms of operation of the equipment, which does not warm the air, but heats the objects, and on the issue of safety.
Quartz lamps are recognized as safe to use themselves, because they do not heat themselves, and accumulate heat and transmit it by emitting heat waves.
The latest developments in the field of infrared heaters are that transparent conductors will be applied to ordinary window surfaces, resulting in the passage of electric current all the glass will radiate heat This method has already been called the most economical. Currently under development for mass production.
Innovative windows that are self-cleaning and warm the house:
Finally, it should be noted that the heater we designed for fishing, referred to the open type, where you can observe the open flame burner.
There are also closed-type heaters, where all combustion processes are formed in a closed cylinder and are invisible to others. Such heaters have a higher temperature of the source itself and a larger radius of heat return, but they are not infrared heaters, such as radiators.
It is also wrong to classify the floor heating as an infrared radiator system, because they warm the feet on contact, and the heat spreads through the room by convection.
The main components for making high-powered gas burners are industrial valves. They can be new, but for a homemade device it is sufficient to use a used one if there is no gas leakage. They are designed to work together with a 50-liter propane gas cylinder, which has an angle valve and reducer.
Burner with a valve VK-74
The design of this burner is shown in Fig. 1. As a basis the valve of an oxygen cylinder BK-74 is taken.To the outlet end a handle nipple, turned on a lathe, is installed, to the grooved part of which a hose from the cylinder is connected. On the part of the valve with tapered thread K3/4˝. to connect it to a gas cylinder, screw on the cap with a prepared hole with a thread for a nozzle. You can use an off-the-shelf version of a blowtorch or gas stove.
The nozzle is made of a 1/4˝ piece of steel pipe 100 mm long and is welded to the cap on two ∅5 mm pieces of wire. Leave a distance of 15 mm between the cap and the nozzle to allow air to enter the combustion zone. Adjust the nozzle position by bending the wire holders to achieve a centered flame position.
Sequence of actions to ignite the burner:
- Open the cylinder valve;
- Hold a lighted match to the nozzle and slowly open the burner valve;
- Control the ignition of gas;
- Adjust the flame with the burner valve
By the way! The highest flame temperature is at the end of the green-blue part of the flame.
Self-made gas burner of this design has one disadvantage, associated with the peculiarities of valve location. The gas flow is in the opposite direction to the normal position. Gland seals are subject to constant gas pressure( wt.ч. when the valve is closed), so you must constantly monitor the tightness of the gaskets.
Warning ! Valve BK-74 should be used only to adjust the flame. Only turn off the gas at the gas cylinder
Burner converted from acetylene gas cutter
If you have an acetylene torch with a faulty oxygen supply tap, don’t throw it away. It is also suitable for making a burner (Fig. 2.). The mixing chamber requires modification, the contents of which should be removed to reduce the weight. We need to remove the oxygen barrel and the valve. The formed hole should be soldered with hard solder. Connect a hose coming from a gas cylinder pressure reducer to a fitting with a left-hand thread of M16 × 1.5.
Screw-on nut on the mixing chamber to secure homemade tip bent at 45 °, so it was easier to work with a torch. Screw a flange with a nozzle welded to the threads of the tip.
One of the options for such a burner is to use a cap with M22 × 1.5 thread. The construction of the nozzle here is similar to the nozzle of the above-described burner. Homemade gas burner is ready to work.
Gas Mini Burner
Mini gas burners are more suitable for working with small parts. The basis of the mini torch is a needle for pumping balls. A cut must be made in it, just beyond the middle of the needle.Some needles already have a similar hole, which greatly speeds up the process. Next, you need to take a syringe needle, and bend it about 45 degrees in the middle.
The sharpened end of the syringe needle is best sharpened so that it is straight. Then insert it into the ball needle in such a way that one end goes through the hole, and the other end protrudes from the large needle by several mm. The resulting mini construction should be secured with a solder. After that, the bases of the two needles should be attached to the drip heads. The clamps of the dropper regulators should be moved as close to the needles as possible. In the resulting burner, they will act as regulators of gas and air supply. They also need to be bonded together, and this is best done with a heat gun. It only remains to connect source of compressed gas to the finished device, and the burner is ready for use. Such a homemade gas burner can heat objects up to 1000 degrees. Work with it carefully, respecting the safety rules.
Features of devices
Infrared burners differ from other heating devices by the way they heat the air. They give off heat by means of infrared radiation.
It is invisible to the human eye, and is directed to the objects that are located in the room. It is their heating that causes the air temperature to rise to comfortable values.
Therefore, as the main source of heating in large objects is used exactly such equipment. During the operation of the device, people in the vicinity do not feel the stuffiness that often occurs when using other types of devices for heating.
Homemade garage heater
The choice of garage heating is an important question for many car enthusiasts. It is solved thoroughly: the bearing structures are insulated, the heating and ventilation system is thought over. All this does not always coincide with a modest family budget. In the case of the impossibility of expensive heating systems, you can do with the help of good-quality homemade models of heaters, assembled with their own hands.
Any driver knows that after a long time of parking the car in the cold it is very difficult to start the engine.
