The fundamental law of repair of unfamiliar electrical devices can be summed up in a nutshell: do no harm! So it’s important to understand how they work and the risks of damage and injury.

In any household microwave oven food is heated by its irradiation with electromagnetic waves. They’re emitted by the antenna of the magnetron. They are then concentrated by the waveguide and directed through its window directly to the heated object.
The design of the appliance, as you can see, uses microwave energy, affecting all objects in its path. These rays are capable:
- heat the food;
- boil water;
- to heat solids;
- induce large currents in metals;
- to destroy the semiconductor elements;
- create burns on the skin;
- burn out the eyeball;
- do useful work or cause various kinds of mischief.
Manufacturers consider all of these risks. They created a solid, double metal cage construction based on the Faraday cage principle.

It is designed to block microwave radiation from escaping outside the cooking chamber in any direction, whether it is the back, bottom, top, side wall, or open door.
I will not focus on the fact that microwave radiation in different models is capable of phoning, breaking through all kinds of defects and cracks. That’s another topic.
Just in case, note that the industry does not produce microwave radiation detectors for nothing, which are used to test the furnaces in operation.
If there is a small gap between the door and the case, the electromagnetic waves from the magnetron will pass through it.
Therefore, the safety of the construction is ensured by a tight fit of the door to the side walls and a rigid control of this condition by actuation of the limit switches. One of their connection options is shown below.
In an open state, the two contacts SWA and SWB prevent the high voltage transformer with magnetron forming high frequency pulses from being energized, while the third SWC prepares the circuit to create a short circuit should the SWA accidentally stick.
It will be eliminated by burning out the built-in 220 volt fuse and backed up by the circuit breaker in the apartment panel.
Such double protection by micro switches and manufacturing of body in the form of Faraday cage introduced by manufacturers from accidental irradiation of users with dangerous electromagnetic waves. We’re not allowed to violate it.
If, however, when repairing with the lid removed, the contacts of the door mickricks are artificially closed to check the passage of current through them, then the dangerous microwave radiation will spread throughout the room. A hapless craftsman can easily get a burned eye or lose his eyesight altogether. And when other people, e.g. curious young children, are near it, there will be much more trouble.
Since very few people at home have a detector of microwave radiation, then it is acceptable to check the work of the Faraday cage by any cell phone. They put it inside the microwave, close the door and dial from a second phone. The call signal must be clearly blocked by the screening grille.

Threats and 3. 2 types of high-voltage. where and what risks the repairman is exposed to
The buzz word “magnetron” is a name given to an ordinary electron tube based on a diode. It delivers electrical current in one direction, using an antique principle of thermionic emission.
All power for the magnetron comes from the output windings of a transformer connected to the mains by a control circuit. On its secondary coils are transformed:
The heater circuits are made with thick wire designed for a constant load of 10 amps, and the high-voltage coil and its wires are highly dielectric.
When checking the operation of a magnetron, the repairman may be exposed to current while the circuit is energized as well as when it is de-energized.
Check the output circuits of a live transformer
The high voltage sine wave of two kilovolts can be seen at the output coil terminal ends or between the ground and the capacitor terminals.
A voltage of 4 kV is present at the anode and cathode of the magnetron or between the ground potential and the anode of the high voltage diode VD1.
The danger in this situation is the usual home handyman’s electrical measuring instrument set, designed for use at voltages up to one kilovolt only. Pay attention to the insulation rating and operation of your devices at these high voltage potentials.
You need to be very careful here.
What risks lurk in checking the transformer with the power off
Pay attention to the high voltage capacitor, which is able to store the charge received during operation. It must be discharged before working on the transformer and its circuits.
Typical malfunctions and troubleshooting
Before going into details of troubleshooting listed below we consider it necessary to warn that before proceeding to diagnostics and repair you should physically disconnect the device from power supply, that is pull the plug from the socket.
No reaction on the start button.
In this case, diagnosis and repair should be subject to the following algorithm of actions:
- Check if there is some voltage in the mains. If it is not present, solve the problem with the power supply; otherwise proceed to the next step.
- Check the power supply of the control module. We start with the fuse. If it is blown we replace it. Then switch the appliance on and try to heat e.g. a glass of water. If everything works, the repair is over. If the fuse blows, the problem is in the control module, it should be repaired or replaced.
To independently repair the control module, you must have certain skills in radio electronics, without them to start their own repair of the control module is not recommended.

Microwave oven doesn’t turn off after the mode is finished.
In most cases such a problem indicates a defect in the door position micro-switch. To fix the problem, we find, check and, if necessary, replace the circuit breaker.
If the micro-switches are normal, the problem may be with the relay, which provides voltage to the power transformer in the power supply circuit of the magnetron. “Check” the relay contacts with a multimeter, if they are stuck, replace the ECU for a new one.
When there is no problem with the relay, it means that the problem is with the control unit, replace or repair it.
Most often this malfunction is associated with a voltage drop in the domestic electrical system. If it drops below 205.0-210.0 V, there is a sharp decrease in the intensity of the microwave. This problem is common in private homes in rural areas, where the power grid is regularly overvoltage, and as a consequence, the voltage drop.
If the multimeter shows the permissible voltage level of the domestic mains, you should check the power circuit of the magnetron, how to do this we will describe in the next section.
When the diagnosis of the magnetron circuit was inconclusive, this indicates a problem with the control module.
Such a malfunction is an indication of a fault in the magnetron power supply circuit. The diagnosis is made as follows:
- Using a multimeter, check the presence of voltage on the primary winding of T1. rice. 1). If it is not present, the problem should be looked for in the control module.
- The presence of voltage indicates that it is necessary to check the high voltage circuit fuse, transformer T1, fuse, capacitance C1, diode VD1 and the magnetron. Check the above elements with the power supply disconnected!
- Check the fuse with the multimeter and switch it to the diode test mode or to the resistance test mode. If the device shows a breakage, we make replacement of the fuse.
- Check T1, breakage and short circuit of primary and secondary windings.
- Test the capacitance C1, how to check the capacitor with a multimeter has been described on our website.
- “Test” the VD If anyone is unfamiliar with the technology of testing diodes, you can read it in a previously published article.
- Checking the magnetron. There are some peculiarities of testing it, therefore let’s look at this process in details:
- First of all it is necessary to “test” the filament, if the multimeter shows the resistance close to zero (see. and in Fig. 6), then there is nothing wrong with it, let’s continue testing. If the device shows a breakage, check the contact of the filter coils (marked by yellow arrows in b fig. 6). If there are problems with the contact of the coils, the device can be repaired, otherwise, everything points to the need to replace it.
- After testing the filament, we check for breakdown of through capacitors. For this purpose we switch a multimeter to the mode “probing”, with one probe we touch the case, with the second one we touch in turns to contacts of a magnetron (b on fig. 6). The normal value will be infinite resistance, otherwise all indications are that the capacitance is broken, which means that the magnetron needs to be replaced.
- If the magnetron check is unsuccessful, it is necessary to measure the input voltages at the device. If they are below the permissible parameters, it may be caused by an inter-turn short circuit in the high-voltage transformer or a low power supply in the household electrical grid.
Important! Magnetron must be replaced by a similar one. This is because the parameters of the high voltage transformer and control circuit are calculated based on the specific model of microwave generator.
Such malfunction can be caused by the following:
- Burned-out mica plate that insulates waveguide from splashing and pieces of food. Plate is located inside the chamber on the magnetron side. Visually check the condition. If the problem is related to the plate, it is enough to replace it.
- The lid of the coupler burned through during use. This is such a plastic cap that rotates the tray. In this case, only replacement will help. Naturally, it is necessary to install the coupler from the same models, because the design of such a cover may be different, even from the same manufacturer.
- The wrong cookware is installed in the oven. We remind you that metal devices, as well as those that have metallic dyes applied, can not be used in microwave ovens.
The first thing to check if the tray is not blocked by some foreign object, if it is properly installed or the separator. If everything is normal, then the reason lies in the drive. This may be due to the following reasons:
Microwave oven repair example
Before throwing out to the dump microwave oven SHARP R-2371K, I turned to my friends with a question whether it can be repaired? The service refused to repair it because of the lack of spare parts, as the oven has long been discontinued.
In the stove, when opening the door again, the handle broke off and the door frame cracked, in addition, the fasteners of the plate with hooks broke off. The handle and the plate spring were lost because the stove had been in the pantry for many years.
The problem was not only to repair the door, it was also necessary to ensure that it was reliably locked in the closed position and lock the circuit when opening. It was impossible to restore the stove to its original condition. After a few days of deliberation, a simple design solution for microwave oven repair was found.
Before the door was repaired, the electrical system was checked to see if it was in good working order. The door was closed, the bar with the hooks inserted in the slots and held in place by hand. A cup of water had been placed in the chamber of the stove. After turning it on, a couple of minutes later the water boiled.
To fix the oven door in the closed position, it was decided to use a magnetic latch. A neodymium magnet, which is shown in the picture, taken from a computer hard drive was used for this. A distinctive feature of neodymium magnets is a high magnetic induction (force of attraction).
To test the idea, the terminals were removed from the limit switches and the bar on which they were installed, after unscrewing two self-tapping screws, was removed from the oven. When the door is open, the middle switch is in the closed position and the outer switches are in the open position.
Next, the magnet was installed in the gap between the slots for the hooks. In the door, an iron frame was installed to protect against microwave radiation. Therefore, during the test, the door was held with sufficient force by the installed magnet. The solution proved to be successful. It was not even necessary to make a hole for the magnet in the furnace body.
To reconstruct the door frame and to create the handle we took an aluminum profile with rectangular cross section. In it were made rough edges for a snug fit and two holes with M4 threads.
The door already had holes in it to attach the broken off handle, so the homemade handle was attached without modifying the door and blended in well with the design. Only remains to solve the issue with the automatic shutdown of the oven when opening the door.
Panasonic microwave NN-S553WF control panel replacement
In any microwave oven, when the door is open, the operation is interlocked with three limit switches that are physically connected to the door bar hooks. When the door is open, the outermost switches are open and the middle one is closed.
The oven is blocked in two steps. When closing the door, the lower hook first presses the pusher of the middle switch.
Then the hook, keeping the middle switch pusher pressed, goes down and pushes the bottom switch pusher down.
Next, the hook, keeping the middle switch pusher pressed, goes down and pushes the bottom switch pusher. Thus, first the SWC switch (shown in the diagram at the beginning of this article) opens the supply wires, and then the SWA and SWB switches close, supplying power to the magnetron and other components of the circuit.
I could not simulate the situation when you need protection for SWC switch, unless the contacts of SWA, SWB and heater relay in the control unit are stuck at the same time. But with today’s reliability of radio electronics the probability of such an event is zero. And even if it happens while the oven is working, no one would open the door. Therefore it was decided not to use SWC when repairing.
To simplify the construction it was decided to use only one of the SWA or SWB limit switches, because to de-energize a closed circuit, it suffices to break one wire. The proposed solution, if desired, allows both limit switches to be actuated as well.
Technically it was convenient to realize the blocking with the help of the limit switch installed in the middle of the bar. So one of the end switches was installed in its place. To remove the switch, you must push in the lock, turn the switch and remove it from the axis.
Then, the detail shown in the picture was bent from a 0.5 mm thick steel strip and installed on the shaft in the form of a screw M2.5. The shape is intricate due to the fitting of the geometry in place. A washer was put on the screw between the part and the plane of the bar for better sliding.

The Panasonic NN-G335 microwave oven is a very successful model both by design and functionality. To date, this model is not discontinued, but only underwent a slight restyling. The oven has an exceptionally handy door handle, grill and electronic (touch) control. Despite the relatively high price in its class, the microwave oven Panasonic NN-G335 is in high demand among buyers. What is the oven in operation in terms of reliability of electronic and mechanical assemblies?
Consider in order all the malfunctions that occurred to the author of this article with this microwave oven since the purchase (2006) to the present day. The first thing that immediately begins to annoy. Too loud speaker signal. It makes you want to take the oven apart to seal up the sound hole. But soon you get used to it, and sometimes you even want to praise the microwave’s designers for the long-distance signal about the readiness of the dish, which can be heard even when the music is playing in the room. The main unpleasant thing about the operation. the bottom of the oven chamber is prone to corrosion (rusting) where the plastic wheels of the turntable ride.
After about three years of operation, a rusty cavity in the bottom of the cavity began to form. High humidity and friction of the wheels on the turntable are most likely the cause of the corrosion. Immediately after this defect was discovered, the oven was checked with a microwave detector for radiation leakage. Everything is normal. The outer casing shields well in spite of the large destruction of the chamber. Light bulb burned out in second year of use. The breakage is not terrible at all and can be easily fixed. To do: open the oven (take off the lid), disconnect the wires on the lamp, remove the lamp and install a new one. However, the bulb there is not usual but special for microwave ovens (the base is not threaded, but in the form of two contacts). It is not too much trouble to buy the tube. As a last resort, you can put an ordinary lamp, inventing a way to fix it and connect the power wires.

In the third year of operation, at one “beautiful” moment the oven did not work at all (the display was not lit, there were no signs of life). After opening the case, the thermostats were checked first, and the fault was immediately found. One of the thermostats was permanently disconnected. In the oven Panasonic NN-G335 of such thermostats two, both working to open when heated above the nominal operating temperature of their body (indicated on the body thermostat). In order to replace a failed thermostat in any microwave oven, you need to know the operating temperature of the failed thermostat, its operating switching current, the type of switching (on or off) and the type of housing (appearance). It was impossible to find the same (in terms of attachments) thermostat. It’s no big deal, the main thing is. to provide a reliable thermal contact of the thermostat body with the body of the object under study (part of the furnace structure on which it is mounted).

It is hard to say what caused the thermostat to fail. Most likely, the reason is simply time, because everything has its service life. If there was overheating, for example, due to something covering the external ventilation slots, then after the furnace is turned off and cooled down, the thermostat should turn on again, which did not happen. And the last thing I had to deal with. Fuse blown in the power supply as a result of the protection diode tripping.

To find the reason of tripping of the protecting diode 2X062H and consequently blowing of the fuse, the resistance of the incandescent circuit of the magnetron was checked, it was found to be extremely low (about 0,1 Ohm), and it was impossible to measure it with a common multimeter. According to the reference data I found for this magnetron, this low resistance was normal for a functioning magnetron, or rather, should be 0.07 Ohm. Also the resistance between the magnetron body and its leads was checked, the resistance was “infinite”, as it should be. From these measurements we concluded that the magnetron is only partially operable (for lack of a deeper test). However, when dismantling the magnetron and removing the protective metal cover, there were traces of excessive local heating of the coils (the enamel of the insulation had a darkening), but the wire itself was not damaged. To make sure of the conditional health of the high voltage transformer, we checked the DC resistance of all its windings. The resistance was approximately the same as the reference data. The measurement results were recorded with a pen on the transformer itself, so that I could double-check the measurements in the future, if necessary.

As a result, it was decided to replace the fuse with a higher-current one (10A), assemble it and test the oven in operation. As it turned out, this decision was right. After the last repair the microwave works perfectly, no unusual noise or abnormal working was noticed. Of course, if I did the repair according to the rules I should have also replaced the burnt out security diode with a new one, but its not the lowest price, lack of radiosupply store nearby and extreme need in the kitchen of the oven outweighed the other arguments.
