Where the key internal module is installed
One unit of protective components was installed on 3 generation Passat. The main relay and fuse assembly in Volkswagen Passat b3 is located on the driver’s side, under the instrument panel. Initially you need to disassemble the shelf, on recent versions of the car. only the hood.
Tip. You can remove the cover by slipping your finger into the hole and pushing it towards you. If it is tight, you can pry it open with a screwdriver. To remove the cover quickly and accurately, turn the latch perpendicular to its position and pull it towards you.
To get the block, where relays and fuses are located Volkswagen Passat b3, in the transport panel, unscrew the side fasteners, carefully remove the device.
Volkswagen Passat B3 B4 fuse box and relay
The fuses and relays are accessible after the shelf is removed from the bottom of the faceplate. On later models, access is gained by removing the cover. The main fuses are located below the relays. The fuses are numbered, and there is a list of the circuits these fuses protect on the shelf or on the cover. Some models have extra fuses and relays located above the main fuses.

The unit is accessible after the catches are unscrewed and the tray has been removed
Relay and fuse identification is marked on the reverse side of the tray.
Relays are easily removed by pulling, and installed by pushing. On some relays located behind the dashboard, you must remove the two plastic brackets before removing them. The fuse and relay assembly is removed after squeezing the mounting brackets on both sides of the assembly. The clips can be moved forward and the relays can be removed from the contacts of the unit. Remove the fuse and relay assembly by levering out of the holders to loosen the group contacts in the holder holes.
To disconnect the pin connector wiring harness from the rear of the fuse and relay box, move the retainers approximately 5 mm in the direction of the arrow
or press the securing tab on the multi-pin connector
When installing, make sure that the unit’s latches are clearly locked.

Number of relays in the fuse box may vary depending on the model (see above).
When the cooling system fails and the fan on the radiator stops working, you must remove and install a new one. In the same way we remove fan on VW Passat B5 of 96. For work you will need a 10 mm wrench (or head) and pliers.
- Remove protective casing, unscrewing bolts. They fix both the cover and the radiator at the same time.
- Disconnect plug.
- Remove fixing screws on the radiator.
- Pull out the fan and remove the screws from its motor.
Since the fan is an important part of the engine cooling system, all malfunctions should be corrected in a timely manner.

Gas pump relay and fuses Passat B3
Element 18 is responsible for the fuel pump. Is in the standard row under the dashboard. Also on the B3 there is a power relay When a part gets very hot and fails, it characteristically cracks. Car does not start well or refuses to start at all.
A similar system is used on engines with mono-injection and similar designs.
Passat B3 starter fuse and relay: where is it located
The design of the launcher and its controls are similar to those used on other cars by the manufacturer. Main relay supplies power to the starter. Then the standard process takes place. Also in the design there is an additional relay. Locate it by the characteristic clicks.
Separate consideration should be given to the draw relay. Repair of the part often turns out to be with zero result. Consequently, if a breakdown is performed replacement of the device as a whole.
Turn signal relay
The regular relay is mounted in position 6 and is marked 21/22 depending on the configuration of the machine. The main feature of the unit is the relay which has a dual function at the same time. The power wires of the turn signals and the emergency stop switch are wired here at the same time. Thanks to a special wiring design it is possible to combine both lines. To replace the part, simply follow the standard procedure. No need to specify a part number in this case. In 2021, there are a large number of companies making parts similar to the factory.
Cooling fan
The fuse for the low speed radiator fuse is on position 13. Fuse 19 is responsible for high speed. Relays are located on the vehicle fenders.
Horn
On cars from 1990 the fuse of the horn is mounted on position 13. Relay is mounted under number 11. Regular relay board designation is 53.
Heater
The heater is controlled by the fuse 6 of the cabin block. In a package without air conditioning, the relay of the power line is mounted under the instrument panel.
Cigarette lighter fuse
In CC version and other widespread modifications it is mounted on position 21. In 2013, reinforced versions appeared on the market, able to withstand the overloads associated with the connection of additional devices.
Drivers have long since learned to connect the cigarette lighter and the socket directly from the battery. This ensures that the loaded equipment can be powered to the on-board network.
Relays for headlights
There are no fuses in the wiring block, they are installed near the headlamps. Since 1989, the auxiliary relay has been popular with drivers. Relay elements in recent versions have become mandatory, they allow to equalize the operating voltage and prevent the elements from burning out.
Wipers
Standard fuses for the rear and front wipers are located at positions 4 and 5, respectively. There are also 2/8 relays. On most models, the switch has the part number 99.
Main light
Two sets of fuses are installed in the car to power the headlights. In most versions, these are 1/2 inserts for the left and right set of headlights. Relays are installed under the hood.
High beam relay
Fuses 11/12 of the passenger compartment unit. Relays are similarly mounted under the hood.
Fog light relay: where is it located?
Fuse and switch are mounted under number 10. Parts are responsible for the front and rear of the car at once.
Passat B3: voltage regulator relay
The alternator regulator is mounted near the machine. It can be found by its characteristic location and appearance.
ABS relay
The central system pump is powered by relay 15. In the diagram, it is often numbered 78. The control system runs from switch 16. The electronic valves are powered by relay 21 and element 22 is responsible for the operation of the smaller electronic systems.
Injection and ignition system
Fuse 15 is responsible for supplying the fuel injectors. The relays are divided into three sections. Elements 3/12/14 are responsible for the operation of the fuel systems in the engine.
Central locking
Most of the versions are equipped with remote elements for protection of the central locking system. The unit fuse is located under the dashboard. The locking mechanism control keys act as relays.
Charging
Power to the battery is controlled by a voltage regulator and an auxiliary relay on the left side fender. This design is common to most versions and configurations.
If this option is available, look for the elements under the dash. The elements can be mounted on one of the reserve slots. For the exact location of the parts, refer to the owner’s manual of the vehicle (the location differs depending on the year and model of the vehicle).
Power windows
Relay 21 is responsible for the operability of the comfort system in the car. There is no original fuse in the system, its role is assigned to the switches.
VW Passat Air-Blower Relay
Air conditioning
Power to the compressor clutch control is via fuse 19. The cell power lines are routed through relay 19. The rest of the equipment is powered by the relay 1.
Headset
The factory sound system is powered through a fuse 22 of the standard mounting block. Some drivers modify the system in the manner of a cigarette lighter. From the battery is a separate line with an independent fuse, which allows to remove the load from the circuit and minimize the percentage of failure due to connecting an overpowered consumer.
Windshield wiper
Fuses 4 and 5 are responsible for the operation of the trunks for the rear and front of the car, respectively. Breakers are powered by relays 2 and 8, similarly. Partitioning into sections allows independent activation of individual parts.
Why fuses often blow on a Passat
There are a lot of cases in the network where users complain about frequent failures and malfunctions. The most common causes are factors.
- Worn out wiring. Outdated machines are often operated without proper care and control, which provokes cracking of insulation, oxidation of contacts.
- Water ingress in the contact groups. This can also be caused by condensation.
- Connection of power-consuming consumers, whose power is higher than the rated wiring.
Location of the cabin fuse module
Hidden from view under the dashboard trim. On the left side of the steering rack.
To access the panel, you will need to remove the shelf and remove it from the car.
Behind the bulkhead part there is a mounting block.
