How a refrigerator works
Refrigerating plant is a closed hydraulic system, filled with special coolant. Freons are used as a refrigerant in domestic refrigeration systems, and ammonia is used in industrial refrigeration systems.
An electric motor-driven compressor pumps refrigerant through the entire system. Passing through different parts of the refrigeration system, the refrigerant changes its aggregate state, its temperature and pressure change.
Inside the refrigerator itself is a special coil called the evaporator. In the evaporator, the refrigerant is supplied in the liquid state at low pressure and temperature. Without going into complexity of thermodynamics and without drawing equations of thermal balance, I can say that in the evaporator there is heat extraction (t.е. heating) from the warmer products, the walls of the refrigerating chamber. Through the walls of the evaporator, the heat is transferred to the refrigerant, and it begins to boil because it is at a low temperature and low pressure.
How does the refrigerator work?
Then from the evaporator, the gaseous refrigerant is sucked by the compressor through the inlet valve, compressed by the piston, its temperature increases and it is pushed into the condenser under high pressure.
The condenser we all know is the coil on the back of the refrigerator. As the refrigerant vapour passes through the condenser, it gives off its heat into the surrounding space through the condenser tubes. The refrigerant is cooled and becomes a liquid.
Then the liquid refrigerant is pushed to the pressure reducing valve. Passing through this valve, the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant decreases and it enters the evaporator again. Then the cycle repeats all over again.
The hydraulic part of the refrigeration system we have already considered. Let’s move on. The compressor is driven by an electric motor and is the most vulnerable and expensive part of the refrigeration plant.
Who will pay the damages
If everything is clear with the causes of power surges, let’s analyze who is to blame. The supplying organization is responsible for accidents at substations, power transmission lines and many other power supply facilities. It is often called “gorsvet”, in fact, the names may vary from city to city. Have your electrician check the safety equipment and wiring in good time, and have contacts and busbars routinely inspected and repaired. Failure to do so could lead to the following problems.
Important! To determine where to go after a breakdown, try to determine why there was a power surge.
If you wall outlets in your apartment have about 380 V, you could have a phase imbalance. It often happens when there is a zero burnout in the switchboard in the entryway or in the electrical panel at home. You could also receive compensation from the building management company for burning appliances.
When sewer, water and gas repairs are done, trenching often occurs, to replace parts of pipelines and gate valves. Despite the fact that such work must be coordinated with the organizations whose communications are laid nearby, as well as must have a plan of their location with workers. problems such as damaged pipes and torn cables often occur. When a cable line is damaged, there can be a power surge. In that case the organization that did the work should pay for the damage.
Sometimes the culprit for a voltage surge are neighbors who either made a mistake when installing electrical wiring, or did other harmful actions, then they reimburse the damage. But it will be more difficult to prove their guilt.
At what voltage can a refrigerator burn out
The voltage in the socket should be 230 volts, but it is not always the norm. If there is a heavy load, it can drop even below 200 volts. And in the case of some switching or accidents it rises above 250 volts. Such voltages are very harmful to appliances that do not have pulse voltage converters, which do not care as much about the incoming voltage. These appliances include refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers. And while washing machines or dishwashers don’t always work, refrigerators are on 24/7.
That’s why refrigerators are the ones that need protection the most. What are the ways of protection? Voltage relays are used to protect devices from voltage surges. The best option is to install such a relay in the apartment electrical switchboard. However, there is not always enough space, and it is likely that you will need to call an electrician.
Then you can use compact voltage relays that plug directly into a socket. They resemble devices in a similar form factor: timers or electricity meters. All relay settings are made on the front panel: it is the threshold of deactivation of voltage drop, excess, as well as a turn-on delay in case of complete loss of mains voltage.
For most cases, the settings will be optimal:
- The lower limit is 200 volts
- 240 volt upper limit
- Turn-on delay of 3 minutes (this is very important for the refrigerators, it is harmful for them to start immediately after turning off)
An example of these relays, which are sold at local stores: PH-116, RBUZ R116y, Robiton PH-2.
Burnt out the refrigerator from the voltage drop
Fridge burned out from overvoltage. Called a master and said so. voltage drop. The neighbors have the same problem. The refrigerator is 2 years old. We have written a statement, electricians are dragging their feet, bosses are walking away from the conversation. What should we do?? Sincerely Pavel.
Household appliance burned down from a voltage drop. TV, refrigerator, receiver, where to turn?
From a voltage drop in the house “burned out” the fridge. The electrician of the managing company drew up the acts. What documents should be submitted to the management company to compensate for the damage?
Our whole district is cut off from the light 4 times a day for 3-4 minutes, at completely different times. They explain it by the fact that it is necessary to switch to another power source. It’s been going on for over a month, there’s no schedule. Power surges when plugged in. Today the refrigerator burned out. What can be done? Thank you!
From time to time, at any time it can be blackout for 10-15 minutes. It could be once a week, it could be three times. It doesn’t depend on the weather or time of day. They cut off the power supply without warning. I had a refrigerator burned out from this (I believe).
If I go to court, can I recover these damages and who will be held liable?? If I have an examination and it is proven to be from a voltage drop, will I get my money back for it if I win the lawsuit?
Neighbors have called an electrician from the management company because they had low voltage. As a result of the repair, there was a power surge and our household appliances burned down in the apartment. We wrote an application to the housing department, to which the reply was: repair in licensed firms with diagnostics and bring receipts, we will reimburse. All equipment has been repaired and there is a document proving that the damage was caused by a power outage. Checks were submitted to the housing department. On the phone the lawyer of the management company offered to compensate for damage to the rent. Since the amount is not small, the repair of appliances lasted 10 days (refrigerator, stove, washing machine, microwave) And given the fact that we live with a paralyzed man (mother. disabled group 1), categorically refused. Today received the official reply by registered mail: Status DV considers your claim unconsidered and not subject to satisfaction on the following bases: p.3 st. 30 Residential housing owner is obliged to maintain the premises in the proper condition. The certificate of technical inspection found that the load on your apartment is 17.1 kW. In accordance with p.5.6.3 of the Rules and Standards of Technical Operation of the Housing Stock (Resolution of the State Construction Committee of 27.09.The Landlord is obliged to modernize and reconstruct the electric equipment in residential buildings in order to allow people to use household appliances with a capacity of up to 4 kW in each apartment with installation of safety switches. On the basis of the abovementioned we consider your claim not to be satisfied.
Of the 15 apartments in the house-four burned appliances. But the neighbors agreed to reimburse it out of the rent because the amount is small. Agree to confirm that the fact of the voltage drop was.
To sue for damages including compensation for moral damages?
My name is Svetlana. I have this question: My mother lives in a private house in the town of Beslan. The game and there were constant power surges in the network (wiring in the house was replaced a year ago). They shut off the power supply for short periods of time and then turn it back on. It can happen five times a day.17.01.2019 another power surge burned out the TV. With this we decided not to contact the management company t.To the TV was purchased quite a long time ago, 18.01.2019 My mom bought a new TV and stabilizer in installments. Today, as it turned out the electricians had scheduled work to check and transfer wires from the pole to the house, residents of the houses have not been warned. As a consequence of these activities, mountain electricians mixed up phases and when you turn on the power burned out the stabilizer and refrigerator. When my mother asked in whose name to write a complaint for property damage, and telling them that bought the stabilizer 18.01.19 they just said “it’s under warranty” and left. Please advise how to deal with this situation. My mom is retired and can’t afford to buy a new one all the time. Thank you in advance for the answer.
Who will reimburse the damage: determining the guilty party
Power lines and other special devices for supplying electricity to homes are the responsibility of the supplying company. This company is responsible for the stable supply of voltage within the 230 kV / 10 kV range. Such figures are fixed legislatively in GOST 29322-2014.
To keep the grid in good working order, city workers must regularly check the equipment that distributes and supplies electricity, as well as work on tightening contacts and busbars. Timely performed procedures exclude sudden voltage spikes due to circuit short circuits or burnouts.
But there is no complete protection against a possible difference. The surge can be caused by a fallen tree, lightning that hit the power line, improper work performed by other organizations and private individuals. The culprits of the accident, in addition to the supplying organization, can be:
In case of a power surge and damage to equipment, the victim will have to identify the culprit himself in order to make him a material claim.
The voltage in the network is one of the criteria for the quality of electricity. If there is a jump, then the guilty party may be the RNO, the management company or a third party. It is they who must pay for the repair or reimburse the residual value of the failed TV.
But before filing a claim for payment, you need to call the emergency service to fix the surge in the network, invite representatives of the supplier to determine the culprit and assess the amount of damage. If the other party does not agree to pay the money voluntarily, the dispute is resolved in court.
The refrigerator burned out from a power surge where to apply
If suddenly the refrigerator smells of burning or you can see the smoke, it is worth immediately disconnecting its power supply and take other measures to prevent fire. But often the signs of a burned refrigerator do not manifest themselves in any way. at one moment it stops cooling, while the LED indicators do not light up.
How to know if your fridge is on fire? The first thing to check is the plug and cord. If you can see signs of melting, you will most likely be able to restore operation by replacing minor components. If everything is alright with the cord, it means that the fridge is burnt out due to a power surge.
Guarantees of reliable electricity supply to the consumer are stipulated in Art. 38 Federal Law 5 On Electric Power of 26.03.2003. According to this article, the supplier of electrical energy must:
1 Provide electric power to consumers and its quality, which meets the requirements of technical regulations.
2 Not to disconnect subscribers from the grid if the consumer is not in arrears in payment of electricity.
3 Carry out repair work to restore power supply.
Plastic backed fridge freezer vs. metal backed fridge freezer
4 Give consumers at least 5 working days’ notice of a power outage.
5 Carry out preventive maintenance of power lines and electrical equipment.
According to GOST 32144-2013 Interstate standards for electrical energy, the voltage in the network should be 230 V. Deviations from the norm, but they must not exceed 10%. At such a voltage is designed almost all appliances. If the voltage in the network is higher than normal, it can lead to equipment damage.
Electricity supply is a service in terms of legislation. The consumer pays a certain fee every month, and the seller ensures uninterrupted electricity supply. The quality of service plays a major role in this aspect. They are directly related to the operation of electrical equipment. According to Art. 14 of the Law “On Protection of Consumer Rights”, the seller is responsible for the provision of substandard services. In our case, it means if the appliances burned down because of voltage fluctuations, the seller of services must compensate the damage caused to the consumer.
If the power surges were caused by emergency situations (strong wind, hail, lightning), then there is no need to count on compensation.
The main causes of power surges
Why do voltage surges happen? The basic question to help solve the problem. There are several answers:
- Power line short circuit. In this case, the culprit of the surge can be as high-voltage power lines, as well as a fishing line with a voltage of up to 1000 volts. This item includes: overhead line short circuit as a result of a falling tree and underground cable breakdown “to the ground”.
- Thunderstorm. Familiar satellites of any thunderstorm. lightning strikes, which are a frequent cause of equipment damage. As you know from physics, lightning requires a large potential difference, so each discharge amounts to thousands of volts, which is a very high voltage. The effect is the same as a short circuit.
- When there is a sudden power outage. In the event of a power failure, it is very common to have to turn off the line as soon as possible, without warning consumers. Sudden actuation of switching equipment can cause a power surge, respectively, lead to the burning of household appliances.
