Installation of gas heating in a private home: a step-by-step algorithm for installing the system
Choosing heating for a private home, many people stop at the gas. This type of fuel is now considered one of the most economical and easy to use.

However, it is dangerous to play with gas. Therefore, in order for the system to work properly, when installing gas heating, it is necessary to take into account many nuances.
Requirements for rooms and air exchange
An important advantage of a private home, as opposed to a city apartment, is the possibility of allocating a non-residential space for the installation of heating equipment. Current regulatory documents provide a number of requirements for the size and arrangement of such rooms. The main ones are:
- the total area of 4 m 2 or more must ensure that the boiler can be placed at a distance of 350 mm from the outer wall;
- the height of the ceiling at least 2.5 meters;
- floor level in the furnace room is not below the zero mark of the building;
- the width of the front door from 800 mm, with the sash must open outward;
- mandatory presence of a glazed window, the area of which is determined depending on the thermal performance of the gas boiler;
- the lighting norm is set to 0.03 l/m 2 ;
- The minimum cross-sectional area of the air channel of natural ventilation is 8 cm 2 for each kW of heating unit capacity.
When organizing the air supply, it is necessary to take into account the amount of air used for gas combustion and add three times the air exchange by volume of the room.
All walls and internal partitions shall be constructed of non-combustible fire-resistant materials with a fire resistance rating of at least 45 minutes. Layout of the room and arrangement of ventilation ducts must not contribute to the spread of flames in case of fire.
The volume of free space not occupied by the installed equipment is regulated depending on the capacity of the installed boilers:
Installation of a gas boiler in a private home with a total heat output of more than 200 kW is prohibited. The capacity of a single unit must not exceed 100 kW.
Installation of a chimney for a gas boiler
An important point for the safe operation of the gas boiler is the presence of the chimney. End in tragedy can be both the malfunction of the device, and its improper operation. - The requirements for the chimneys of gas boilers are prohibited to have more than three bends in the path of the combustion products out of the gas boiler. The part of the pipe connecting the unit to the chimney must not be longer than 25 cm.
The second stage: the connection to the heating water circuit
To figure out how to connect a gas boiler to the heating system, it is necessary to understand where it has nozzles, from which there is an outlet to the heating circuit. Almost all models are designed identically. At the bottom of the unit (usually in the center), there is a branch pipe for the gas line, and on the right and left of it. branch pipes for connecting to the water mains. Near the end part there are outputs for the connection of the water circuit: the return and the supply of coolant to the radiators.
When connecting a wall-mounted boiler to the heating system, it is important to make the connection with maximum tightness. Various sealants are available on the market to keep out potential leaks. To connect the water, as a rule, use the traditional “proven” hemp, paint and modern seals. They are inexpensive in price, but they allow you to assemble a trouble-free heating system.
Manufacturers of gas boilers warn of the danger of small debris entering the system. This can happen when the water in the system is contaminated. If this is allowed to happen, the gas unit can go out of service. There is a simple solution: to install a coarse filter on the connector of the return water pipe. It will significantly increase the “life” of the boiler and increase its performance. When a coarse filter is already installed in front of the water meter, you do not need to put it in front of the gas boiler.
Therefore, before you connect a two-circuit gas boiler to the heating system, you need to buy the necessary filters in advance.
Advice. Compulsory condition for installation of the filter: the direction of flow of the coolant must match the direction of the arrow on the filter housing.
When installing the boiler provide for mandatory installation of shutoff valves. Plumbing fixtures are placed on the water supply and return pipes. Without these devices it will be very difficult to perform repairs. If you do not provide shut-off valves, then when repairing faults in the system the air left in the pipes will block the coolant circulation. As a consequence. poor heating of radiators and their failure. That is to say it is not reasonable to save on valves.
Get rid of air inside the system
To quickly and efficiently bleed air it is necessary to unscrew the Meyevsky cocks on each radiator. At first, you will hear a whistling or hissing noise. this is normal. If the water starts to flow from the radiator. then there is no air lock.
Bleed the air from the battery that is highest in level.
When you check all the radiators. see what the boiler manometer now shows. The pressure will probably drop a bit and you will need to recharge your heating system with water.
But in addition to plugs in the pipes, the normal operation of the boiler can prevent the air inside the circulation pump. This is easy to fix. Some models are equipped with an automatic venting system, but as a rule, it is not effective enough, so the first time it is better to get rid of clogging manually.
To do this, remove the front cover from the boiler body, then look for the pump itself. a cylindrical part with a plug for a flat screwdriver. Sometimes, the pump is located behind the dashboard, which can easily be pushed back or removed from the gates. To deflate the pump, turn the boiler into the socket and start heating water. The boiler will now start up. The pump will also begin to engage in the work process. confirmation of this will be an incomprehensible gurgling sounds inside the unit. do not be alarmed, this air. We take a flat screwdriver and slowly unscrew the plug. When the water leaks. screw the plug back on. This procedure should be repeated several times. When you stop hearing the gurgling of water inside the device, and your gas boiler will start working. then you have completely got rid of the air inside the pump. At this stage, you should again check the manometer readings with the instructions to the device. In principle, we can stop here. now your boiler will heat water inside the radiators, and if it is a two-circuit unit. also in the water supply.
After starting the boiler turn on the far radiators to the maximum, and the near. tighten. This is done using special regulator valves that are installed on the radiator inlet pipe. After debugging the heating system, you can set a comfortable temperature of the batteries.
But it is not superfluous to test and flush the heating system. After these procedures, you will be 100% sure that the inside of the radiators are clean and your heating system has no leaks.
Requirements for the boiler room
To use a gas appliance with a capacity of 30 kW or more, a separate room that complies with all applicable rules and regulations is required.
Most often a room in the basement or cellar is equipped with a boiler room. However, such installation of a heating unit is only allowed for single-family dwellings.
In a private home the rules of installation of the gas boiler allows the use of equipment of any capacity, since most often it is placed in a separate room attached to the house, which allows heat supply not only rooms, but also utility rooms.
Important requirements for a boiler room are as follows:
- The minimum floor area for a gas boiler at the rate of one unit-4 m². In this case in one room can be placed no more than two devices. This size boiler room in a private home is a must.
- The ceiling height must be at least 2,0-2,5 meters.
- To provide natural light, you need a window, the size of which is determined on the basis of 0.3 m² per 10 m³ volume of the room for the gas boiler, but not less than 0.5 m². There is also a certain distance from the gas boiler to the window in terms of safety.
- The width of the door opening may not be less than 80 centimeters.
- Minimum distance from the front door to the unit.100 centimeters, but 130 to 150 centimeters is better.
- To create the conditions for repair or maintenance activities in front of the boiler should be provided free space of at least 130 centimeters.
- Proper installation of the gas boiler in a private home means that it is located in a horizontal position and stands stably. This minimizes the level of possible noise due to vibration.
- The floor and walls must be made of non-combustible materials, besides the flooring must be absolutely even.
- In the boiler room should spend a cold water, and in the floor to arrange sewage drain for the coolant.
- For electrical sockets must make a ground loop, as the ignition or the pump is connected to the power supply.

Standards and requirements for the installation of gas boilers
We should immediately mention that the installation and connection of double-circuit gas boiler can only engage in specialized organizations that have permission and a license for these activities. Independent installation and connection is fraught with a fairly high penalty. But still some work to prepare for the connection of the boiler and the registration of necessary permits will have to perform independently.
The following recommendations and rules are excerpts from the basic normative documents such as SNiP 42-01-2002 “Gas-distributing systems,” and Snip II-35-76 “Boiler plants,” Code of practice for designing autonomous heating systems SP-41-104-2000. These regulations describe in detail what you can and can not do when installing gas equipment. We will, however, consider the main most important requirements for the installation of gas boilers.
The room where the gas boiler will be installed must be at least 4 m2 with ceilings not lower than 2.5 m;
The doorway in the room must be at least 80 cm in width;
The room must have a window opening. The size of the window is calculated on the basis of the following requirements. per 10 m2 of area a window of 0.3 m2;
It is mandatory to have good ventilation in the room to ensure continuous gas combustion. The area of the opening must be 8 cm2 per 1 kW of boiler output. This also applies to boilers with closed combustion chamber, which use coaxial chimneys that combine the functions of the removal of combustion products and air supply to the boiler;
Diameter of the chimney is chosen according to the capacity of the boiler itself and is calculated by a special formula. In general, for heating the house boilers from 30 kW to 40 kW are mostly used. Accordingly, installed chimneys with a diameter of 130 mm and 170 mm;
The upper end of the chimney must protrude above the roof ridge by 50 cm. If a coaxial chimney is used, its outlet end must protrude from the air intake by at least 20 cm;
Gas main in the house should be made of metal pipes. And for connecting the boiler to the main line, you can use flexible corrugated pipes;
The boiler must be equipped with a special current and thermal protection circuit breaker;
The room with the boiler must be equipped with a gas analyzer;
Installation of gas boilers in the basement is allowed only for private houses. In apartment buildings, the installation of gas boilers is only permitted in the kitchen or in a specially designated boiler room;
Each boiler must be equipped with a gas meter;
In the room must have a pipeline of cold water;
In the room where the boiler will be installed, the walls must be aligned and plastered;
Boilers must not be installed on combustible surfaces, in corridors, in bathrooms, in dormitories, on balconies, in rooms without windows and vents, in basements of apartment buildings;
The boiler must be positioned a minimum of 15 cm from the wall. From the upper edge of the chimney to the ceiling there must be at least 20 cm. The outer part of the chimney must protrude from the house wall by 30 cm. The height of the hinged boiler must be 0,8. 1 m above the floor, and a thermal insulating panel must be placed between the wall and the boiler.
Important! If a two-circuit boiler with a closed combustion chamber, the presence of windows in the room is optional.
Following these simple rules you can easily obtain a permit to install a two-circuit boiler in your home. Of course, it is worth having a closer look at SNiP, as the above rules are general and some limitations for each case are possible.
Connect the thermostat to the gas boiler
Room thermostat is connected to the gas boiler in order to ensure more economical operation. Install the thermostat in the farthest room or a place that you would like to know if it is time to “turn up the heat” or if it is still warm. This device will transmit information to the boiler automatics that the temperature in the room has reached the lower allowable level, the boiler will automatically turn on and heat the coolant until the thermostat reports that the maximum temperature has been reached.
Place the thermostat on the inside wall of the house, 150 cm above the floor. The appliance must not be exposed to any heat sources, vibrations, drafts or sunlight.
Modern boilers have special terminals for connecting a room thermostat. Initially the contacts are closed, as if giving a signal to the boiler that it is necessary to heat the coolant. Therefore it is necessary to remove the jumper which closes the contacts. Then connect the thermostat to the terminals with a 0.75 mm2 two-core cable.
Connect gas to the gas boiler and start it only by the gas service, otherwise you will pay a heavy fine for negligence. For the reference let’s specify that it is necessary to bring gas by a steel pipe or a corrugated pipe from stainless steel in diameter of 8. 9 mm, also to use a paronite gasket and hemp for sealing.
