What to fill the dishwasher with?
If the dishwasher performs poorly, it is possible that the dishwasher is not being filled correctly. It is necessary to choose competently not only the detergent, but also the salt and rinse aid. Here’s how to fill your dishwasher so dishes are sparkling clean and streak-free.
The dishwasher is capable of washing any utensil to a shine. stainless steel pots, glasses, pans, cutlery. But in order to get perfect results, the machine has to be filled correctly.
Some compounds are mandatory, others are added periodically. They can also be classified according to their effect:
- aimed exclusively at washing the dishes, giving them a fresh and shiny appearance;
- Those which take care of the condition of the internal parts of the appliance in contact with water;
- some of them work in combination. they wash, they prevent problems, and they improve water/washing quality.
The detergents that are used for washing the dishes in the automatic dishwasher:
Electrolux EEM48321L QuickSelect // dishwasher
- To wash. Manufacturers offer different forms of release. gel, in the form of powder, capsules or tablets. It makes the dishes look clean.
- Salt. It is needed to reduce the hardness of water. Washing performance declines at high hardness. It also prevents the formation of limescale on the parts coming into contact with hot water.
- Rinse aid. Needed on the final stage. Its function is to give the dishes a pleasant smell and shine. It also prevents streaks, improves drying quality.
- Degreaser. It is used when the dishes are heavily greasy. This compound prevents the formation of greasy deposits on the inner parts of the machine.
- Antiscale. Effective against lime scale. It is used to prolong the life of the appliance. Used once every 3 months.
Consumables for the washing machine
When the kitchen helper is bought, it remains to know how to properly use its services. Even the best dishwashers on the market. Bosch (Bosch), Hansa (Hansa), Electrolux (Electrolux), Ariston (Ariston) or Siemens (Siemens), need care and with improper use will quickly fail. To make them work properly for a long time, you need to provide them:
- With quality detergents. They come in gels, powders and tablets. A separate category is rinse aid. without it, the dishes will have streaks and smudges. Several functions can be combined in tablet preparations. 3, 5, 10 There are pills, which are positioned as “all in one”.
- Salt. you have to buy it separately if you use a normal detergent or dishwasher gel. If the water is too hard, then even tablets, which already contain salt components, do not save. still have to add salt.
Why do you need it??
The harder the water in the pipes, the more you have to pour the salt product. Do you need salt where the water is soft?? No, I don’t. To solve the problem radically, you can, for example, put at the inlet a special filter with ionized resin. It’ll soften the water.
In regions with low water hardness, you can use special tablets. they already contain salt granules. If water hardness is high. and a special test strip will help to find out the hardness value. you will have to buy special softening compounds which can be loaded into the dishwasher separately from the detergent.
How often should I put salt in the dishwasher?
The frequency of filling the salt reservoir depends on the concentration of Mg and Ca in the water, and on how often the dishes are washed. According to the owners’ feedback, if the water hardness is average and the dishwasher is turned on daily, the reservoir has to be filled every 5-6 weeks.
How the water hardness level affects the salt consumption
The higher the concentration of Ca and Mg, the more often you need to add salt to the dishwasher. And in soft water, you don’t have to use it at all. There are dishwashers, where the water hardness value is set manually. To find out, you need to measure the water hardness. Get the most accurate data is possible by sending a sample of liquid to the laboratory. But this is quite a laborious and time-consuming process. It is easier to use test strips sold in pet stores and home improvement stores. The strip is placed in the water, and it changes the intensity of its color according to the concentration of Ca and Mg salts in the water.
Why do you need salt in the dishwasher?
All dishwashing machines (Hansa, Siemens, Bosch and others) are equipped with ion exchanger. This is the box that is located underneath the machine tray. Inside the box are sodium ions that neutralize the harmful effects of potassium and magnesium ions. The water passes through the ion exchanger before it enters the washing machine compartment through the atomizer. Harmful impurities are attracted by the ions so that the dishes are washed with soft water.
What is the salt for and how does it get into the water?? Over time, the ion exchanger is depleted, the ions are washed out. Therefore, you should periodically put salt tablets in the compartment. They replenish the ions necessary for the dishwasher.
The benefits of using salt for your washing machine:
When to add salt?
The dishwasher will tell you. If the corresponding icon or indicator on the control panel is flashing, it’s time to load a new batch. The main thing is not how much or when to load the salt solution, it’s important that it’s always in the machine.
Almost all dishwashers have the same salt reservoir layout. It is on the bottom of the chamber. under the bottom basket of dishes. If it’s granular, pour it through the funnel so you don’t accidentally spill it.
Don’t worry if you’re confused. Get the manual for your machine, there is a detailed diagram of the device. so you know where everything is located. The salt compartment can be on the bottom, or on the side or bottom of the door.
If the machine will be the first run with the addition of salt tablets, first fill the container with water, and then put the agent. then the crystals will dissolve faster and will not stick to the walls of the compartment.
How much should I pour??
In order not to waste the product and get the desired effect, you need to know how much salt product. powder or tablets, to load into a specially designated compartment. The first thing to do is to read the information on the package. Usually it is written there that the designated container is filled completely. The capacity of these containers in different models of the washing machine is not the same, so the task of the owner is simply to fill it. How long does the salt solution last in the hopper is another question.
In the majority of models, the container for the salt solution holds 2/3 of a 1.5 kg bag, i.e. 1 kg. If the salt product is in tablets, then the compartment is also filled to the limit with them.
How the salt consumption relates to the water hardness
To reduce the water hardness, the manufacturers have provided an ion exchanger in the design of the machine. There is a resin inside it that neutralizes all harmful impurities. they can form a fouling on the heating element and other parts when water is heated. Inside the ion exchanger simple chemical reactions involving ions take place. it is not necessary to understand it thoroughly, it is enough not to ignore the manufacturer’s instructions.
If water loses its hardness when it passes through the ion exchanger, why do you need any further treatment?? That’s why the salt is called “regenerating”. it has the power to restore the balance of substances in the resin.
Ways to find out how hard your water is
There are several ways to determine the hardness of your water:
- With the naked eye. Use laundry soap and soap on a piece of cloth (rag). If the cloth does not wash well and is hard to rinse out, the water is very hard.
- Observation. Watch how quickly plaque forms on faucets, plumbing fixtures, and other places in contact with water from the faucet. Plaque “sticks” to surfaces quickly if it is too hard.
- With a test strip. Precise and fast variant.
Warning! Hardness is a seasonal phenomenon. To get accurate results and calculate the salt consumption, check every 3-4 months.

Read a detailed article on hardness determination in a separate article.
Is it easy to determine how often you should add salt to the machine?? First, read the instruction manual of the appliance. it describes the process in detail and step by step. So, for example, in machines Bosch (Bosch) there are up to 7 degrees of hardness for fine-tuning the technique. When the salt supply is depleted, the control panel will run a red indicator. When using capsules the light bulb is easy to turn off. so it does not bother, select the mark “0” of the proposed levels of hardness.
Even in Bosch machines (as well as Siemens or Electrolux), setting the hardness to “0” does not always help draw water bypassing the ion exchanger. If you ignore the manufacturer’s recommendations, do not buy salt, and use only tablets, the ion exchanger can clog with impurities coming from the water. This threatens a serious breakdown of the equipment.
By using salt, you will not only get perfectly washed dishes and soften the water, but also protect the components of the machine from premature wear and tear.

There are a variety of balls that are used in the washing machine. Anti-static will keep fabric from sticking to your body after washing, balls with special loops will “comb” lint and prevent the appearance of lint, and silicone ones with pimples will not let pile up fluff when washing outerwear.
The expression “soap opera” (“soap”) does not appear by chance. The very first series and shows with a female audience were broadcast on television at a time when housewives were doing the cleaning, ironing, and laundry. In addition, to attract viewers to the screens, commercials for detergents (soaps and powders) were often shown on the airwaves.
Washing machines are related to the origin of the expression “money laundering. In the 1930s, American gangsters used the laundry chain as a cover for their illegal activities. By passing off the proceeds of their criminal activities as money from the cleaning of clothes, they turned the “dirty” money into “clean” money.
There is a washing machine “for bachelors.”. Laundry washed in such a machine needs no ironing at all! The thing is that the device does not have a drum: some things can be placed inside the container directly on hangers (for example, jackets and shirts), and smaller things (say, underwear and socks). on special shelves.
The first officially patented washing machine was made of wood, in the form of a box with a frame half-full of wooden balls. The laundry and detergent were loaded inside and a lever was used to move the frame, which, in turn, made the balls move and grind the laundry.
Washing machines fitted with the “No Ironing” or “Easy Ironing” functions can wash laundry without creasing it. This effect is achieved by a special approach to spinning. it is performed at low speed, with long pauses, and a small amount of water is stored in the tank.
History has it that a kitten got into the drum of a washing machine and got out of the machine safe and sound after a full wash cycle on the “Woolens” program. The only trouble for the pet was an allergy to laundry detergent.
To wash small items on the road or in a hotel, it is convenient to use a regular plastic bag. Socks or tights are kneaded inside a knotted bag with water and a little detergent. This method allows you to pre-soak items and wash them without damaging the fabric or wasting a lot of powder and water.
Astronauts, being on the orbit of the Earth, solve the problem of dirty clothes with an original method. Clothes are thrown from a spaceship and they burn up in the upper atmosphere.
